Howard Earl Upperco, 88, of Columbia, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.

Born April 19, 1925, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Leon and Treva Leister Upperco. He was the husband of Betty Josephine Holbrook Upperco, who died in 2012.

He had been an electrician for many years. He had served in the Navy as a medic during World War II. He was a member of Boumi Temple and had been active in the campers club.

He was an avid home team sports fan, enjoying both the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens. He enjoyed sports; he had learned to ski at the age of 60 and played softball in the Maryland Old Liners team for more than 25 years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and family trips to the beach.

Surviving are daughter and sons-in-law Connie and Tom Brown, of Dayton, and Herbert Goodrich, of Hampstead; a sister, Marie Douglas, of Westminster; grandchildren and spouses Jeffrey and Jenny Brown, Adrienne and Jason Delozier and Jason Brown; and great-grandchildren Lindsey and Austin Brown and Kelsi Delozier.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Carol Upperco Goodrich, in 2001; and brothers Albert, John and Sterling Upperco.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
