Joseph Leiter Aitcheson Jr., 85, of Westminster, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House.

Born July 31, 1928, in Olney, he was the son of the late Joseph L. Sr. and Lillian Roby Aitcheson.

He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1952, serving in WWII and the Korean War. He was a steeplechase jockey and was a leading rider. He was inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975 and the National Museum and Racing Hall of Fame in 1978. He won a record 440 steeplechase races and led all North American jump riders in wins a record seven times.

He attended the University of Maryland, where he played football. He enjoyed boxing in the Navy, the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens, jitterbugging and his cats and dogs.

Surviving are daughter Jody A. and husband Thomas Davis, of Sykesville; sister Jane and husband Ronald Cartwright, of Laurel; grandchildren Jacob Stepp, of Eldersburg, and Brett Davis, of Sykesville; and nephews Robert Curley, Jay Curley and Beaver Curley.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service, 11 a.m. Friday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Interment will be private.
