Ruth Anna Black, 86, of Union Bridge, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center, following a brief illness.

Born June 4, 1928, in Uniontown, she was the daughter of the late Levine Carbaugh and Mary Evelyn Albaugh Carbaugh. She was the wife of Norman Wesley Black, who died in 2001.

She attended Uniontown School and graduated from New Windsor High School. She was an active member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, where she was a member of the Fellowship Committee and the Knotted Quilts. She was formerly employed at the Union Bridge Clothing Factory which became H.L. Hartz Clothing, until her retirement in 1990.

She assisted with fundraising breakfasts for the town of Union Bridge and for a brief time was on the Union Bridge Zoning Commission. When her children attended Elmer Wolfe Elementary School, she was active in the school PTA. She helped with the silent auction during the Union Bridge fire company carnival week.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching the Orioles, working in her yard, watching hummingbirds, going to flea markets and yard sales and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are daughters Mary Frances Weller and husband Herb, and Sandra Miller and husband Francis, all of Taneytown, and Audrey Bowman, of Union Bridge; son J. Kenneth Black and wife Debbie, of Union Bridge; grandchildren Dennis Stambaugh, Shari Norris, Lisa Zepp, Michelle Miller, Tricia Darnell, Dana Ricketts, and Jeffrey Miller; 13 great-grandchildren; and brothers John D. Carbaugh and Charles L. Carbaugh, both of Westminster, and W. Luther Carbaugh, of Gettysburg, Pa.

She was predeceased by a great-grandchild, Nicole Hill.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St., Union Bridge, with her pastor, the Rev. James Benedict officiating. Private interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood.
