Florence H. Deitz, 91 of Sykeville, died Monday, July 7, 2014 at Fairhaven in Sykesville. Born August 13, 1922 in Holbrook, she was the daughter of the late Seth and Zenobia Marshall Holbrook. She was the wife of the late Ralph Edgar Deitz, who died in 1990. She was a graduate of Catonsville High School. She had been a homemaker and community volunteer for many years. She was a member of the Randallstown Women's Club where she served as their President from 1960-62. While President they established a loan closet for medical equipment at the Randallstown Health Center and worked with the public health nurse. She was actively involved with Baltimore County General Hospital from the early planning stages. She worked with community organizations to turn a rehab center into Baltimore County General Hospital, currently Northwest Hospital Center. In the beginning they did everything from serving meals to patients to laying concrete floors in the basement. As part of a community group they bussed to Annapolis to get Blue Cross acceptance for the hospital. She was part of H.E.L.P. (Hospital Emergency Lift Program) and went door to door in the Randallstown community to initiate support among the hospital's neighbors. She was a founding member of the Baltimore County General Hospital Foundation and served as their treasurer in 1975. She was also a founding member of the Baltimore County General Hospital Auxiliary in 1964 where she served as President from 1966-68. She was the Auxiliary representative to the Baltimore County General Hospital Board of Trustees from 1967-68. She was elected to the Baltimore County General Hospital Board of Trustees in 1969 where she went through the offices of secretary, second vice president, first vice-president and then serving as President from 1989-1992. She continued on the Board of Trustees until 1997 and was currently an emeritus member. Florence was also very active in church work. She taught Sunday school for 20 years at First Presbyterian Church of Randallstown. She then was a member at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Randallstown where she sang in the choir and helped with many church projects, including furnishing new choir gowns. She was also a long standing member of Mount Paran Presbyterian Church where she was born, raised and married. She was a resident of Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville where she volunteered for many activities including the health care center where she poured water and visited patients several times a week. She also helped with annual furniture sales and reading the announcements for the day's activities on the in-house TV channel. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law James E. and Mary E. Deitz of Columbus, OH, daughter Gail L. Deitz of Eldersburg, grandchildren Lisa Arndt, James Wenzel, Kaitlyn, Nickolas and Elizabeth Deitz, and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Seth Holbrook, Jr. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville. Interment in Mt. Olive UMC Cemetery, Randallstown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9pm and on Friday from 10am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairhaven Resident's Assistance Fund, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville, MD 21784.
