Chester B. Rayburn, 81, of Liberty, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Feb. 21, 1936, in Liberty, he was a son of the late John Harrison and Cora Henderson Rayburn. He was a retired school teacher of 33 years in Goshen, Ohio. Chester also managed a hardware store for eight years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and also served in the Kentucky and Ohio National Guard. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.

Chester was a member of the Little Cowan Baptist Church in Whitesburg, where he served as a deacon. He often attended the Liberty First Baptist Church. Chester served as a Boy Scout Master and DeMolay advisor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eula McAninch and Mildred Wethington; a brother-in-law, Curtis Wethington; and a grandchild, Joseph Rayburn.

Survivors include his wife, whom he wed Feb. 3, 1960, Verna Banks Rayburn; a son, Kevin D. (Melissa) Rayburn of Leitchfield; a daughter, Renee (Shawn) Stevenson of Columbus, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Glenwood Cemetery with Brother Jimmy Brown officiating. Burial with military funeral honors by the Casey County Honor Guard follows in Glenwood Cemetery. Masonic rites are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glenwood Cemetery.
