Dorothy Ellen McFarland, 86, Liberty, Ky., passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 at Hospice of the Bluegrass in Lexington, Ky., with her family by her side.
She was born in Crawfordsville, Ind. and was a native of Carlisle, Ky., a daughter of the late Esther Dayton and Henry Baker Boggus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David L. McFarland Sr.; daughter, Mary E. Martin; son, Timothy W. McFarland; grandson, David R. Martin Jr.; sisters, Mary D. Boggus, Chloe Garrett, Margie Cropper, Barbara Lizer, and Mary Frances Lynch.
Dorothy was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, always active with missions organizations. She served faithfully by her husband's side at his pastorates of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Pond Missionary Baptist Church, Flat Lick Baptist Church and Drakes Creek Baptist Church.
She attended God's Bible College in Cincinnati and was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. She retired as a dorm teacher/supervisor at Kentucky School for the Deaf in 1990. She long enjoyed breeding German Shepherds and was a founder and active member of the Peavey Cemetery Board of Directors.
Dorothy is survived by her son, David L. (Sandy) McFarland of Berea; two daughters, Martha G. (Brett) James of Liberty and Rebekah L. (Steve) Dixon of Lawrenceburg; three sisters, Jo Anne Whitteaker of Pinellas Park, Fla., Betty (David) Tollefson of Torrance, Calif., and Joy (Tom) Bridges of Lexington; a brother, David (Sally) McClure of Amelia, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Oct. 3 at the Chapel of Bartle Funeral Home, Liberty, with Rev. Kenneth Crew and Rev. Gale Durham officiating. Burial was in Peavey Cemetery.
Pallbearers were William "Tiny" Stafford, Stan Coffman, Frank, Mark, Mike and Steve McFarland, Darrell Barlow and Andrew Walters.
Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Tyree, Ellen Michelle Wagner, Levi McFarland, Jessica Lazer, Hannah McFarland, Rachel McFarland, Alex James, Callie Dixon, Logan Dixon, Daniel McFarland, Isaac McFarland, and Sam McFarland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peavey Cemetery, c/o Phyllis Miller, 10253 Ky. 1547, Liberty, Ky. 42539.
