Leeman D. Byrd passed away Saturday, Sept. 27 2014 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington with his family by his bedside. He was 78. Born in the Phil community of Casey County on Dec. 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Freddie and Zellie Lay Byrd. He proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Macon (CA-132) from 1955-1958. Prior to his retirement, he was a gate salesman for more than 13 years, spending the majority of his time in Arkansas and Oklahoma. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lucille Denson Byrd; a son, Jerry (and Sharon) Byrd of Liberty; two daughters, Terri (and Hart Jr.) Wallace of Liberty, and Sandra (and Tony) Lawson of Blanchard, Okla.; a step-son, Donald Skaggs of Liberty; four granddaughters, Nakesha (and Corey) Hager of Stanford, Magan Byrd and Kayla Byrd of Liberty, and Emily Lawson of Oklahoma City; two step-grandsons, Danny (and Ji Su) Skaggs of Nicholasville, and Sam Skaggs of Somerset; four great-granddaughters, Kalyn and Alyanna Fair, and Leah and Maddy Skaggs; two brothers, Lilburn Byrd of Science Hill, and Harold Byrd of Erlanger; two sisters, Shirley Luster of Cincinnati, and Kathy Hines of Liberty; and mother-in-law, Anna Belle Denson Emerson of Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Truman Byrd, T.C. Byrd, and Murrell Byrd. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 1) at the Bartle Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Brandon Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Baptist Church Cemetery.
