Samuel E. "Jackie" Murphy, of Decatur, Ill. passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital. He was 79. Born Jan. 25, 1935 in Elkhorn, he was the son of Claudia Hazel Bottoms Murphy of Mannsville and the late Otha Coy Murphy. He was previously employed with Caterpillar in Decatur, Ill., as a security officer, with over 29 years of service. Mr. Murphy served as Chief of Police for the village of Buffalo for 17 years, retiring in 1988. He also volunteered with Buffalo Fire Department and served on the village of Buffalo township board. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church in Elkhorn and enjoyed fishing, shopping, wood working, and spending time with his family. Other survivors include his loving wife, Lona Faye Long Murphy, whom he married Dec. 20, 1951; son, Jerry Murphy of Decatur, Ill.; daughter, Julie Murphy of Decatur, Ill.; three brothers, Roy D. Murphy of Beach Grove, Ind., William Keith Murphy (and Cathy) of Elkhorn and Dale (and Debbie) Murphy of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Janis Murphy of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends. In addition to his father, "Jackie" is preceded in death by a son, Edward Lee Murphy; and two brothers, Carlton Murphy and Eugene Murphy. Funeral services were Oct. 6 at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Don Clark and Bro. Jeff Edwards officiating. Mr. Murphy was laid to rest in Jones Chapel Cemetery.
