Tommy "Tom" Ellis (1927 - 2016)

Tommy "Tom" Ellis, 88, of Casey County, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 at the VA hospital in Lexington, Ky.
Tom was born on Sept. 26, 1927 in Englewood, Colo. to James H. and Maria U. Ellis. Tom was the youngest of three brothers, who preceded him in death, James L. Ellis, Eugene R. Ellis.
Tom received his diploma while serving in the military. Tom served in the United States Navy from 1944-1947 and is an Atomic Veteran. He then joined the United States Army from 1948-1953.
During his time in the Army, he was stationed at Kaiserslautern, Germany and was present for the Berlin Airlift.
After his time in the military, he worked as a chief agent for American Airlines in El Paso, Texas. He also worked for Martin-Murrieta on the Titan Missile project. Tom also worked for Continental Airlines helping what was then a regional carrier become a national, then international airline.
Tom settled in Casey County where he helped reestablish the Friends of the Library and had also served as President of the board. He was an active member of the Friends of the Library until his death. His hobbies included cooking and reading.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Jean R. Ellis;a stepson, Kent Tiegen; and a grandson, Brad Donley.
He is survived by daughters, Jean McClary (Roger) of St. Matthews, N.C., and Laura Brooks (Tom) of Camarillo, Calif.; sons, Steve Ellis (Nellie) of Danville, Ky., Tom Ellis of Carson, Calif.; two stepsons, Tracy Tiegen and Allen Tiegen of Liberty. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Tom donated his body to the University of Kentucky for science and research. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 16, at 4 p.m. at the Casey County Library.
