Virginia Sweeney's story ended on Nov. 13, 2012 at her home in Liberty. She was 94. Her story began on Feb. 26, 1918 when she was born to Bowen and Myra Fleener Bell in Glendale. She married Garnett Jones Sweeney Sr. on Sept. 11, 1939. They had been married 71 years at the time of his death in 2011. To their union were born Garnett Jones Jr., Barbara Sue, and Donald Bell Sweeney. Virginia was a student in the Norton Hospital School of Nursing in 1936 when she met Garnett Sweeney, a medical student at the University of Louisville, at a dance. They both graduated from their respective schools in 1939. Dr. Garnett went to New Orleans to start his internship at Charity Hospital. In September he returned to Glendale to ask his Ginny, as he always called her, to marry him. They returned to New Orleans so Dr. Garnett could continue his internship. While Dr. Garnett was doing his internship, Virginia worked as a nurse at Tulane University and also as a private-duty nurse. They returned to Liberty in 1940 where Dr. Garnett went into practice with his father. Virginia worked for a short time in the doctors' office but did not continue long. She later said that she should never have gone into nursing because she had a long history of fainting at the sight of blood. She also said she was glad that she had, however, because she would not have met her future husband otherwise. She was an active and long-time member of First Christian Church in Liberty. Virginia is survived by her children, Dr. G.J. (and Shelley) Sweeney, Barbara Sue (and Larry) Griffin, Don (and Pam) Sweeney; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, David Bell of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Montford. Graveside services were Nov. 16 at Glenwood Cemetery with Bro. Homer Hecht officiating. Memorial tributes may be made to First Christian Church, 323 Middleburg St., Liberty, KY 42539; or Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, KY 42503. Pallbearers were Tom Griffin, Matt Griffin, Ben Sweeney, Clay Sweeney, Michael Sweeney and J. Sweeney. Honorary pallbearers were Donna Denson, Kathy Miller, Kim Allen and Linda Roy. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with guestbook available at
