William "Bill" Lester Short, 84, of Shelbyville, quietly passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Norton Pavilion Hospital in Louisville surrounded by his loving family.

Born March 31, 1933, in Middleburg, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Branson Short; a son, Don Branson Short; a grandson, Taylor Scott Wolfe; a brother, Judge Robert Maurice Short; and his parents, William Lester Short and Martha Clay Fogle Short.

His was a long and full life well lived, being revered by family, friends and colleagues for his strength, wisdom, compassion for others and his love of the outdoors.

Bill spent his career dedicated to public service for the benefit of the people of the commonwealth of Kentucky in numerous capacities. Retiring from the Kentucky State Economic Development Cabinet as commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Community Development. He also served as executive director, Turnpike Authority of Kentucky; deputy secretary, Governor's Executive Cabinet; special assistant, Superintendent of Public Instruction; secretary, Kentucky Development Cabinet; administrative assistant, Governor's office and executive assistant, Governor's office. Bill attended Western Kentucky University and University of Louisville and was a member of the Son's of the American Revolution.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons; William Stephen (Steve) Short and Mark David Short; six grandchildren, Stefani Lynn Huff, William (Will) Eric Mannon, William Alexander Short, Brooke Erin Trammell, Michael David Short and Lissa Renee Stoess; nine great-grandchildren, Darcy Joy Mannon, Isabella Raelynn Stoess, Isaak Walter Trammell, Anna Catherine Stoess, Sean Michael Short, Lendon Robert Stoess, Layla Renee Trammel, Tristan David Short and Sebastian Dean Short; and three great-great-grandchildren, Karcen Lawrence Wolfe, Aubree Lynn Wolfe and Ariana Taylor Wolfe.

No funeral service is planned. There will be a private graveside remembrance at a later date at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
