Thomas Wilbur Filer Jr. Obituary
Thomas W. Filer Jr. passed away on September 11, 2018 at Dogwood Village Health and Rehab in Orange, Va. from dementia and heart failure. Born August 4, 1942 in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas W. Filer Sr. and the late Christine Campbell Filer.
Thomas graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and attended Dominion College in Richmond. He retired after a 32-year career as an architectural sales rep for W. R. Grace, where he achieved numerous national sales and products awards. He wrote and presented educational seminars on fireproofing at the University of Maryland. After he retired from W. R. Grace, he worked along with his wife, Patricia, as a real estate appraiser until he retired in 2008.
He was an avid outdoorsman; enjoyed hunting, fishing and skeet shooting. He was an active member of Piedmont Sportsman's Club in Gordonsville and a past president of the Orange Rotary. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Louisa, Va. and later a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange where he was a member of the St. Andrews brotherhood.
He will be remembered as a kind, gregarious man who never met a stranger and loved life with an energy that was contagious.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Patricia O'Grady Filer; a son, Thomas Lewis Filer and his wife, Jennifer E. Filer, of Louisa, Va.; a daughter, Stephanie Garrison of Ruckersville, Va., and grandchildren Lauren and Lane Filer and Annabelle and Grace Garrison.
The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff of Dogwood Village for their kindness, steadfast care during his illness. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at St. James Episcopal Church in Louisa, Va.
