Thomas graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and attended Dominion College in Richmond. He retired after a 32-year career as an architectural sales rep for W. R. Grace, where he achieved numerous national sales and products awards. He wrote and presented educational seminars on fireproofing at the University of Maryland. After he retired from W. R. Grace, he worked along with his wife, Patricia, as a real estate appraiser until he retired in 2008.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Louisa, Va. and later a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange where he was a member of the St. Andrews brotherhood.
He will be remembered as a kind, gregarious man who never met a stranger and loved life with an energy that was contagious.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Patricia O'Grady Filer; a son, Thomas Lewis Filer and his wife, Jennifer E. Filer, of Louisa, Va.; a daughter, Stephanie Garrison of Ruckersville, Va., and grandchildren Lauren and Lane Filer and Annabelle and Grace Garrison.
The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff of Dogwood Village for their kindness, steadfast care during his illness. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
