Theodore Lindquist Obituary

Reverend Dr. Theodore Lindquist Jr. The Rev. Dr. Theodore Lindquist Jr., 91, of Selings-grove, passed peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2013, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove. He was born March 7, 1922, in Pleasant Gap, a son of the late Theodore and Vera (Hockenberry) Lindquist. In 1952, he was married to the former Nadine E. Eustis, who preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 2003. He was a 1939 graduate of Bellefonte High School, a 1950 graduate of Gettysburg College with a bachelor of arts degree, a 1953 graduate of Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, with a bachelor of divinity degree and a 1975 recipient of the honorary degree of doctor of divinity from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. On Nov. 3, 2002, he and his wife, Nadine, were jointly honored to receive the Betty R. Amstutz Award for Outstanding Social Ministry from the Upper Susquehanna Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries. In 2006, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for "Celebrated Ministry of Lifetime Service" from the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary Alumni Council. The Rev. Lindquist was ordained by the Lutheran Church in America in Philadelphia in 1953. He served the following pastoral charges during his ministry: the Sugar Valley-Salona four-church pastoral charge, Clinton County, and for 17 years, the Liverpool pastoral charge, Perry and Snyder counties. During his 17 years at Liverpool, the long-standing six-congregation pastoral charge became three, with Trinity (Liverpool), Messiah (Hunters Valley) and St. Michael (Pfoutz Valley), uniting on Nov. 1, 1960, to become the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Liverpool. From 1975 to 1987, the Rev. Lindquist served as assistant to the bishop of the Central Pennsylvania Lutheran Synod, serving 113 Lutheran congregations in northcentral Pennsylvania. Following his retirement in 1987, he served as interim pastor at Sharon Lutheran Church, Selinsgrove, and the Freeburg Lutheran Parish, Snyder County. For the next 20 years, he was visitation pastor for Sharon church. After retiring a second time, Dec. 31, 2009, he was honored by Sharon church with the designation pastor emeritus. The Rev. Lindquist was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church, the American Association of Retired Pastors and Susquehanna's Institute for Lifelong Learning. He served two terms as dean of the former Sunbury Lutheran District and two terms on the Middlecreek Lutheran Conference, served on the executive board of Tressler Lutheran Associates, the Rural Church Board and the Social Ministry Commission of the Central Penn Synod, the Perry County Council of Churches, the Liverpool Planning Commission and served for nine years as "temporary" cub-master of Liverpool Cub Scout Pack 91. He also served two terms as president of Snyder County Branch 8466, Lutheran Brotherhood, and was a member of the Snyder County Historical Society. In World War II, he served with the 1636th Engineering Construction Battalion in Europe, the Philippines and Japan. He received an honorable discharge in May 1946 with the grade of master sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post 25, Selinsgrove. The Rev. Lindquist is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Joan, of Duncannon, Mark and Brenda, of Liverpool and David and Donna, of Harrisburg; one daughter, Sallie, of Selinsgrove; two granddaughters and their spouses, April and Tim Wagner, of Millerstown and Amber and Jeremy Portzline, of Mifflintown; one great-grand-daughter, Corissa Wagner; one great grandson, Bryce Wagner; three step grandsons and their spouses, Chris and Colleen Falcone, of Enola, Bret and Rachel Fryer, of Lancaster, and Erick and Casey Fryer, of Warrington; three step great-granddaughters, Emma and Claire Falcone and Quinn Fryer; two step great grandsons, Nathan and Joel Fryer; one brother and sister-in-law, Terrance and Connie, of Pleasant Gap; two nephews and their spouses, Terrance II and Hollie, of Bellefonte, and Robert and Kristen, of Pleasant Gap; one sister-in-law, Jane Whiting, of Santa Monica, Calif.; one stepbrother, Charles Sager and wife, Ethel, of Julian; one stepsister, Peggy Beightol and husband, Stellard, of Pleasant Gap; many step nephews and nieces; and paternal cousins in Sweden, Lisbeth Johansson and Aina (Hans) Erikson, and Ivar (Charita) Lindquist, of Thailand. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Emma. Friends and family will be received from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, and 9:30-11 a.m., Friday, March 15, 2013, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., at Sharon Lutheran Church, 120 S. Market St., Selins-grove, with his pastor, the Rev. Robert P. Doll, and the synod's bishop, the Rev. Robert L. Driesen, officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam. If desired, contributions in the Rev. Lindquist's memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of Sharon Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choosing. Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
