Edward F. Bala

Edward F. Bala Edward F. Bala died peacefully surrounded by family at his family residence following a 21-month battle with cancer. He was born September 27, 1957, in Johnstown, a son of the late Edward J. and Ann (Vasko) Bala. He received a B.S. from Penn State University and then worked in the Information and Technology department there for 33 years, until his illness required early retirement. Ed is preceded in death by his son Luke Edward and an infant son Will, daughter Sarah, and his beloved sister Janet Anthony (Joseph), and his parents. During his long illness his great comfort was knowing he would be re-united with them in the presence of God. At the time of Luke's death, Ed and Betsy were told they would be unable to have a family. In his incredible mercy they were given the amazing blessing of being the parents of seven children through both birth and adoption: Joshua and Robert of State College, Lauren, Emily, Aaron, and Meron, all at home, and Caitlin Bala-Neff (Joseph) of State College who gave him is first grandchild, Aiden, on July 31, 2013. Two sisters, Anita Klyn (Nick) and their daughters Jenna and Michaela of Richmond, VA, Mary Lou Bala and her daughters and granddaughter Ana, Clair, and Lanaiss Gadean of Minneapolis, MI; and his mother-in-law, Lois Paff of Boalsburg, also survive. Family was Ed's greatest joy. He attended University Baptist & Brethren Church where he sang in the choir, and was member of the social action and awareness committee as well as other programs. He belonged to numerous adoption and environmental groups. He was also a Civil War buff. Ed was well known for his dry sense of humor, and every time his family hears a well-executed pun they will surely think of him fondly. His family, church family, friends, and neighbors provided incredible ongoing love and support during his long cancer battle. A visitation will be at the University Baptist & Brethren Church, 411 S. Burrows Street, State College, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, with the funeral service following at 1:00 p.m., with The Reverend Bonnie Kline Smeltzer officiating. In lieu of memorial contributions in Ed's name can be made to the Bala Children Educational Trust, C/O Penn State Federal Credit Union or University Baptist & Brethren Deacons Funds. A guestbook can be signed or condolences sent to the family at www.heintzelmanfuneralhome.com.
