Dean E. Dashem, Sr. May 13, 1933 March 20, 2014 Dean E. Dashem, Sr., 80, of Millheim, passed from this life on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Born May 13, 1933, in Centre Hall, Dean was a son of the late Elmer Jacob and Maude Horner Dashem. He was a 1952 graduate of Centre Hall-Potter High School. On June 15, 1957, Dean married Cynthia Z. Hazel, who proceeded him in death on December 20, 2008. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Dean was employed as a lab technician in the chemistry lab at Penn State University, retiring in 1987, with 30 years of service. He also did sub-contracting work for S&A homes as a painter and was the Millheim Borough tax collector for 25 years. Dean was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, the Black Panther Riding Club, the Lions Club and the Millheim Fire Co. and Fireman's Club. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and was an avid Penn State football fan. Dean loved animals, often rescuing stray cats and giving them a home. Above all else, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Dean is survived by three sons, Dean E. Dashem, Jr., (Belinda), of Millheim, David R. Dashem, of Stormstown and Dan M. Dashem (Deah), also of Millheim; five grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Brittany, Derek and Dylan. Also surviving are siblings, Jean Keene, of Boalsburg, Dorothy Rimmey, of Centre Hall, Donald Boller, of State College, Betty Fitzgerald, of Easton, Naomi Barbour, of State College, Paul Dashem, of Pleasant Gap and Norma Reed, of State College. Dean was preceded in death by five sisters, Phyllis Stringer, Geraldine Meyers, Beatrice Rimmey, Joann Walker and Margaret Young, and two brothers, Floyd Dashem and Bruce Dashem. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 1-2 p.m. at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Cass Harbach officiating. Dean will be laid to rest with full military honors at Paradise Cemetery in Spring Mills.
