 Harry Thomas Smith February 26, 1920 January 13, 2013 Harry Thomas Smith, of Boalsburg, formerly of West Chester, died on Jan. 13, 2013, at The Fair- ways of Brookline Village. Born Feb. 26, 1920, to George W. and Sara C. Smith, of West Chester, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeanne W. Smith, of Boalsburg, formerly of West Chester. Also surviving are his two children, Bonnie Smith Marshall (Peter), of Boalsburg, and Terry C. Smith (Joyce), of West Chester; and five grandchildren, Paul R. McCormick (Jessica), Philadelphia, Sara A. McCormick, Philadelphia, and John T. McCormick (Janelle), Pittsburgh, Monica J. Smith, Washington, DC, and Brittany R. Smith, Washington, DC. Two siblings survive, William H. Smith (Ann), West Chester, and Margaret "Peggy" Titter (William), Bedford. He was a graduate of West Chester High School and attended the Pierce Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1941, he became manager of the family trucking business and subsequently, was employed by and retired as, the traffic manager for A. Duie Pyle Trucking in West Chester. Born and raised in Chester County, he served his community as a supervisor for West Goshen Township, Boy Scout Leader for Troop #6 and active Rotarian, receiving the designation of Paul Harris Fellow. Harry served in the U.S. Navy Naval Air Corp as a pilot and navigator from 1943 through 1945, when he was honorably discharged. Harry and his wife retired to the State College area in 1987, and became an active volunteer with Mount Nittany Medical Center and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. His service to others is a hallmark of his life. He cherished his grandchildren and remained active in their lives until his death. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family and interment will be in Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery, Chester County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814 or to the Chester County Council Boy Scouts of America, 504 South Concord Road, West Chester, PA 19382.
