James J. Roland August 16, 1948 February 9, 2014 James J. Roland, 65, of Altoona, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at UPMC - Altoona, unexpectedly. Mr. Roland was born in Altoona on August 16, 1948, son of the late John E. and Vernita (Strittmatter) Roland. He married Diane L. Leidy on October 12, 1968, at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte. He was a van driver for Blair Senior Services, Altoona. He previously was an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Company and worked for Lamar Advertising. He was a member of Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Altoona, where he served as a Lector, member of the Charismatic Group and the RICA Team. Jim was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Life Member of the National Rifle Association and an Active member of the Pro-Life movement. He enjoyed his family and church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife and seven children, Jamie D. Roland, of Elmira, N.Y., Jennifer D. (husband Brian) Rupnik, of Bethlehem, Jason M. (Heather) Roland, of Altoona, Joseph P. (Shawna) Roland, of Altoona, Justin P. Roland, of Mountain Top, Joshua J. (Laine) Roland, of Altoona and James J. (Jessica) Roland II, of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; and six siblings, Daniel Roland, of Boalsburg, Ann Easter, of Prescott, Ariz., John Joseph Roland, of Phoenix, Ariz., Raymond A. Roland, of Bellefonte, Therese M. McIntyre, of Prescott, Ariz. and Margaret M. Bathie, of Cedaredge, Colo. Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette M. Roland; and a sister, Mary Agnes Hoover. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. Committal Rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona. Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at Jones Funeral Home where a Vigil For the Deceased will be celebrated during the visitation.
