Carl Weaver Obituary

Carl Howard Weaver Aug. 24, 1929 - June 25, 2011 Carl Howard Weaver, 81, took his leave on Saturday morning at Garden Spot Village, New Holland, with his wife, LaVonne, devotedly at his side. Carl was born in Boalsburg, a son of the late Clarence Orlando and Florence Heckman Weaver. Carl attended Lemont Elementary School and State College Area High School, where he was graduated in 1947. He was class vice president, and received the "Most Valuable Player" football trophy, as well as a wrestling award. True to his high school nickname, "Westy," Carl headed west to Colorado, where he met his future bride, LaVonne Katherine Monge, at the home of her uncle, who became Carl's friend and mentor. Carl helped construct a road to a silver mine at about 14,000 feet, and used dynamite to clear the way for Colorado's first ski area, Arapaho Basin. On July 14, 1948, Carl joined the United States Air Force and served as an investigator in the 3535th Air Police Squadron at Mather Air Force Base, California. On July 20, 1951, Carl and LaVonne were married at her home in Longview, Wash., followed by a bicycle honeymoon across the Rockies. During his military service, Carl was severely injured in a plane explosion, leaving him with life-long physical challenges. After a long recovery period he completed his military service with an honorable discharge July 6, 1952. Later, Carl would serve his country in the Air National Guard of Pennsylvania, 112th AC&W Flt., State College, from 1958-1961. Carl continued his education at Pennsylvania State University, culminating in a masters degree in Industrial Arts, while working as a research assistant in the Physics Department. Carl taught Industrial Arts at Penns Valley High School, then became coordinator of the Industrial Arts Department at State College Area High School until retirement to his farm in Linden Hall, Pa. in 1995. Carl is survived by his wife, LaVonne, and daughters, Debra L. (Charles C.) Nydegger of Boalsburg and Suzanne F. (William G.) Dreibelbis of Linden Hall. Surviving siblings are one brother, Clarence Eugene (Mary Johnston) Weaver of Warriors Mark, Pa.; and a sister, Florence Louise (LeRoy "Pete") Ishler of Milton, Pa. Carl was loved by his six grandchildren, William A. (Katie Cumerford) Dreibelbis of Bryan, Texas, Carl E. (Amy Slobozien) Dreibelbis of Middletown, Pa., Katrina L. Dreibelbis of State College, Erin A. Nydegger of Wyomissing, Pa., Andrew C. Nydegger of Philadelphia, Tessa M. Dreibelbis of Linden Hall; and one great-grandson, James W. Dreibelbis, of Middletown, Pa. He was predeceased by one brother, Randolph Heckman (Barbara Pierce) Weaver. Carl was the descendant of Michael Weber/Weaver, Revolutionary War Patriot and Ranger of the Frontier. He was a teacher, farmer, friend and inspiration to many. Linden Springs Farm is filled with evidence of his legendary work ethic, his superb animal husbandry, and his vision for stewardship of the land. He was deeply rooted in Centre County, Pa., as were countless ancestors. He was a man at once of enormous strength and abundant gentleness, a man possessing great humor, also a man of few words that spoke volumes. To paraphrase Charlie Russell, western artist, we hope to meet again at the great meeting in the sky. Groff-High-Eckenroth Funeral Home in New Holland has handled funeral arrangements. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Wolf Chapel/Stover Cemetery in Aaronsburg, Pa., among Carl's ancestors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made "In Memory of Carl H. Weaver," Rock Hill School at Linden Hall, P.O. Box 151, Boalsburg, PA 16827 or "In Memory of Carl H. Weaver," Benevolent Fund at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, PA 17557.

I first met Carl over 40 years ago.Over that time. I came to love him as a father, older brother and best friend. He embodied much that I have aspired to, but will never be. Carl had the courage to confront what he felt to be wrong or unfair, and to some who did not know him, often presented a gruff and tough exterior. His love and tender care of animals was but a small portion of the complex "inside".

I am thankful to have sailed through most of my life with him near. Our obscure projects and adventures will always be a major part of my best memories. We never had a cross word.
My profound grief is tempered by the knowledge that his trials of the last few years are over.

Debbie and Charlie have dedicated huge resources in every measure to make his life as good as it could be, and Lavonne stood by him to the end. There have been many hard decisions to make. My deepest sympathies to all his family.

To all those that knew Carl Weaver, his life requires no elaboration of mere words. We will always remember Carl as a powerful and lasting statement of what "being a man" is all about.

Carl and LaVonne bought Linden Springs Farm, where we had lived for many years, when we decided to move into town. They loved it as we did.
Carl will certainly be missed by those in the Linden Hall community, as well as a much wider circle of people he touched during his life. Peace.

Carl Weaver was a great teacher who taught a lot more than just wood shop. The students really respected him and he returned that respect. He included many life lessons with his shop instruction and even after nearly 40 years, his classes are still one of my favorite memories of my time in high school. Thank you for everything Mr. Weaver!

Sorry to hear of Carls passing. He taught a woodshop class I was in years ago at State High. Carl was a good teacher. My great uncle Russ Evey would talk about Carl and how he liked him.

Lavonne and family,

Many of us will greatly miss Carl. While it took me some time to realize it, I have come to view him and his beliefs as a replica of Don Quixote. He acted stern and tough at times, but tempered it with genuine empathy. He spoke loudly when he saw injustice to assist those who might not be willing or able to speak out. He mounted a mythical charger and fought the dragons he encountered and put them to rest.

With all of the above, he truly cared about people and went to great lengths to show his understanding and concern for them. His help often went unnoticed except by those who benefitted by it.

Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us.

Susie and Debbie,
With the death of our parents, it’s hard not to recognize the inevitable passing of time. Parents should be eternal, always there, always available for advice and guidance, never growing old and leaving us on our own. My deepest condolences on the loss of your father; he lived a life that is no longer found today, but I think so many people wish they could have. I always thought your dad would make a great Marlboro Man; cowboy-tough, weathered, experienced. Not many can follow in those footsteps today. I hope you can find peace in the midst of pain, and comfort in the words and thoughts of friends.

Carl will always be remembered for the respect he received and gave to the students that were lucky enough to have him at State High.
I found him to be someone I have admired since our paths crossed in wood shop around 1971-72, while I was forging a "get out of class" pass. My reaction, as I turned my head to see Mr. Weaver watching over my shoulder was quite terrifying, to say the least. Those massive arms and gentle grin were quite the combination.
We laughed about that many times, afterwards. He was strict, yet so fair and made you not want to disappoint him again. That is special.
He taught myself and many others how respect is truly earned. It can not be forced or demanded.
My stories could go on. He will always be remembered as a man that this world needs more of.
May the family find peace in memories of goodness towards his neighbors and all that knew him. Thank you Mr. Weaver, You will be missed.

I am really sorry to read of your husband and dad's passing. I had him for shop class and always enjoyed him. He was one of those teachers that got respect from his students.
I also enjoyed the few times that I came over to your farm and spent time with you there.

I will always remember Carl as a strong and gentle one of a kind man who fiercely loved his family, his friends, the animals and the land to which he devoted himself. Magical times at the farm as a child are memories that stay with me always. Carl created that magic. He is so, so missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I didn't know Carl, reading his obiturary I noticed he is a descendant of Michael Weber/Weaver. I too am a descendant. I am sorry for the loss of your loved one. May God be with you.
