Charles Earl Staley February 17, 1927 - January 11, 2013 Charles Earl Staley, 85, of State College, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Foxdale Village, State College. Born Feb. 17, 1927, in Wichita, Kan., he was the son of the late Clarence and Bernice Russell Staley. In 1954 he married Rhoda McCord, who survives. He is also survived by three children, Duncan Staley, of Rockville, Md., Blair Staley and his wife, Mary, of Bloomsburg, and Jessica Staley and her husband, Eugene Clothiaux, of State College; a brother, Paul Staley and his wife, Mary Kate, of Adams Run, S.C.; three grandchildren, Daniel Clothiaux and Josh Clothiaux, both of State College, and Elizabeth Staley, of Bloomsburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen MacMillan and Mary Beth Tilley. He graduated from a one-room school house in Munden, Kan., in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army, and earned degrees in economics from the University of Kansas and MIT. Charles taught in the economics departments of the University of Kansas and SUNY Stony Brook in New York. He spent a year each teaching in Costa Rica and at Harvard University and University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He was active in Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Beta Chapter at SUNY Stony Brook, where he served for 18 years as chapter secretary-treasurer. His academic interests included international economics and the history of economic thought, and he authored articles and books on these subjects. In his younger years, Charles enjoyed theatre, music, square dancing, hiking, camping and mountaineering activities. Memorial services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foxdale Employee Appreciation Fund, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.
