George Miller Obituary

George W. Miller October 30, 1929 - October 19, 2010 George W. Miller, 80, of Millheim, formerly of State College, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at his residence in Millheim. He was born Oct. 30, 1929 in Bloomsburg, son of the late Truman R. and Marie L. (Utt) Miller. On Sept. 24, 1929 he married Helen L. Ingram of Emporium, who survives at home. George was a 1947 graduate of Benton High School and a 1951 graduate of the Williamsport Technical Institute as an Electronic Technician. He was an electronic technician for Penn State at the Ordinance Research Lab (now known as Applied Research Lab) from 1951 to 1986. For his first 11 years, George did research for the government on a Navy contract in Key West, Fla. He traveled extensively over the 35 years to Bermuda, Caribbean Islands, Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since 1989. George was the Nursery Leader for 10 years, caring for the children from 18 months to three years of age. He enjoyed roller skating, crocheting, woodworking, dry wall finishing and could fix anything. George and Helen enjoyed traveling in their motor homes. They visited every state in the union with the exception of North Dakota, Alaska, and Hawaii. George was very active all of his life. A tribute to his amazing character and beliefs is how well he handled the many challenges he faced in the last two years of his life since becoming a paraplegic. In addition to his wife, George is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Beckenbaugh, of Millheim, Daisie Miller, of Millheim, and Virginia Price, of Harrisburg; one brother, Donald Miller (Betty), of Grove, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 9-10:30 a. m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 842 Whitehall Road, State College, with the funeral immediately following at the same location. Internment will be in Centre County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Home Nursing Agency, 450 Windmere Dr., Suite 100, State College, PA 16801 or to the American Heart Association, 777 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. When I think of those who touched my life and set an example for me, I will always think of George. He didn't preach or quote scripture, he just gently lived it. George is one of those few "lights" you meet in life who exude goodness and love for the people he met.

He's one of the two men I've known who are responsible for my growing tool collection and a commitment to use those tools and my limited talent to benefit others.

George isn't gone. He's just gone ahead to help others.

I knew George through his membership in the genealogical society, and it was always a pleasure discussing family history with George and Helen at the regular meetings and outings of the society. I know that George had such a great appreciation for family history because he had such a great appreciation for family. Truly a wonderful man. Please accept my sympathies and prayers on his passing.

'Grandpa Miller' was truly an awesome person. I remember whenever I was sitting in the hallway, he would walk by and wink at me and ask how my day was. I still have the scrunchies that he made for the girls at Girls Camp. He will be missed and I know he made an impact on anyone he came in contact with. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

To everyone who knows you as grandpa, dad, or friend;
He was my great grandpa, he was the one who taught me how to skate, I guess you could say it was our thing. I was the last person he got to skate with before he was in a wheel chair, I'm very grateful to know that. Everyone will miss him a lot, I wish the last time I saw him was not the last...

George may have had a heart that in the physical sense didn't really work right for decades, but in the truest sense, he had an absolutely perfect heart. I am so grateful to have witnessed first hand that wonderful love he felt and gave to those precious Primary children. His lap was never empty and a much coveted place of peace for so many. I treasure the works of his hands I can see in my home, and more so our friendship and that wonderful smile. I love you dearly George and Helen! You are some of the best and most Christlike people I will ever know.

Grandpa George made a difference in the lives of the people he met. I am very appreciative we had the opportunity to go on adventures with he and Grandma Helen and to be in their home to feel of their love and genuine concern. We ache for his family and especially Grandma Helen. We will remember with love and fondness.

Dear Helen, Patty, Daisy, Ginny, and all family members,
Our hearts are sad at the news of George's passing. He was truly our "father" when we were living in Centre Hall. We will never forget his selfless service, his loving nature, nor his faithfulness to the gospel. Truly, he was one of the noble ones of our Father in Heaven. May the Lord's Spirit fill you with comfort at this time of sorrow. We love all of you!
