Sandra Caryl Schumacher Sandra Caryl Schumacher passed away on Dec. 29, 2012, in Alexandria, Va. She was a daughter of the late Harry and Jeannette Caryl, of Scranton, and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. She graduated from Bucknell University in 1960 with dual degrees in Sociology and Psychology. Shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Bill, and the couple embarked on a 30 year career in the US Army. Sandy was the consummate military wife, accompanying Bill to locations across the United States and overseas. Through her many moves she served in volunteer positions at the American Red Cross, and the Girl Scouts and was also employed in various positions with the Mount Olive School District in Mount Olive, N.J., the YMCA in Davenport, Iowa, the Girl Scouts of Northern Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. and the Army Times in Alexandria, Va. She was a loving mother and wife and provided warm and welcoming homes everywhere her family was stationed. Sandra was a lifelong musician who played the piano and loved to sing. She and Bill were avid Penn State football fans and traveled to State College, for many home games. At the time of her death, she was on the Board of Directors at the Mount Vernon-Lee Child Development Center, an active member of Bush Hill Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at Miriam's Kitchen. Sandra is survived by her husband Bill and her sister Karen Emory and husband, Hugh, of Phoenixville, Pa. She leaves behind two daughters, Leslie Schumacher and husband, Charles Gardner, of Alexandria, and Caryl Waite and husband, Bill, of State College; as well as three granddaughters, Katie Ishler, Emily Ishler and Caroline Gardner; and great granddaughter, Charlotte Entz. Visitation will be held on Jan. 4, 2013, from 2 -4 p.m. at Jefferson Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Jan. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Bush Hill Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Miriam's Kitchen, 2401 Virginia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20037 or the music program at Bush Hill Presbyterian Church, 4916 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA 22310. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
