Dr. Roger Behm Saylor May 23, 1917 - May 2, 2013 Dr. Roger Behm Saylor died peacefully in his sleep on May 2, 2013, in Juno Beach, Fla. He was 95. Roger was born on May 23, 1917, in Reading. He spent most of his childhood in central New Jersey where his father, a high school principal, helped cultivate his passion for mathematical analysis. Roger went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics, a master's degree in economics and, after serving as a Coast Guard engineering officer in World War II, completed his Ph.D. in economics. In 1947, he settled in State College, where he spent the next 34 years as a professor at Pennsylvania State University in both statistics and economics. During his years in State College, Roger used his love of statistical analysis to experiment with football rating systems, developing a high school ranking system which was used by the Newark Evening News from 1947 until 1972, when the newspaper ceased publishing. The Western Conference Association also adopted this ranking system and continued using it until 1985 when several conferences merged. Roger retired from Penn State as a professor emeritus in 1981 and relocated to Florida. He continued to compile high school and college football records through 2012. These 60-plus years of records can be found at http://alumni.libraries.psu.edu/saylor.html. Roger was master bridge player. He cherished his Friday night bridge games and his passion for bridge lasted up until his passing. He will be forever remembered as the most dedicated and competitive bridge player at The Waterford in Juno Beach, Fla. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered on Friday nights. In addition to his substantial professional accomplishments, Roger was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Joseph, of Naples, Fla.; son, Richard (Dick) Saylor, of Islamorada, Fla.; daughter, Barbara Ann Kargol, of Libby, Mont.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Condolences can be emailed to Dick at email@example.com or Barb at firstname.lastname@example.org.
