William Waterhouse Obituary

William C. Waterhouse William C. Waterhouse died on June 26, 2016, at Hearthside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, State College. He was born in Galveston, Texas, on December 31, 1941, to the late William T. Waterhouse and Grace D. Waterhouse, of Denver, Colo. He received his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Harvard University. He began his teaching career in 1968 at Cornell University, and in 1975 joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Penn State, where he served as professor for more than thirty-five years. He was the author of more than 250 scholarly publications, and was especially proud of having twice won (in 1984 and 1995) the Lester R. Ford Award of the Mathematical Association of America, for excellence in mathematical writing. His interests outside of mathematics were eclectic, including classical Greek and Roman literature, opera, music, world history, Sherlock Holmes, humanism, and science. On October 11, 1980, he married Betty S. Waterhouse (nee Senk), who survives him. She wishes to thank the staffs at Mount Nittany Medical Center and of Hearthside for their compassion and invaluable assistance during her husband's illness. At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, friends may direct contributions to Americans United for Separation of Church and State, 1901 L Street NW, Suite 400, Washington DC 20036 or au.org. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome. com.

I am so sorry to hear this. Bill was the best teacher I ever had (grad student at Cornell) and was a huge influence on me as an algebraist. I always considered him a personal friend as well.

Dear Betty,

Please accept my deepest condolences on losing your husband. I'll keep your family in my prayers.

In early 80's I used to sit in Bill's graduate courses. The notes I took had been very helpful to my own research and teaching. I was very impressed by his knowledge and the speed at which he wrote and spoke. No one in our department could exceed him. I also deeply appreciate the friendship from you and Bill. The blue bag you offered me at the baby shower party before my first daughter was born was a nice gift and souvenir-- it had been used for many years and for both girls.

May you find peace and strength in you after this terrible loss. Remember that there are old friends in the Math Department. Please do stop by when you have time.

With best wishes,
Winnie Li

I remember Bill as a very bright but quiet, shy, helpful, and modest colleague. We dd not share a common area of mathematics, but I recall asking him once about how he would prove a certain theorem in algebra. Within a few hours he got back to me with one of the simplest and most elegant proofs that I had ever seen in this area. And it was clear to me that this was his own idea. I only wish that I had gotten to know him better. Frank Deutsch

I want to offer my condolences to the family and loved ones of Dr. Waterhouse. In 1978, I was one of his students in a graduate level abstract algebra course at Penn State. He helped me appreciate the meticulous and complex process of proving things in mathematics. To this day, after almost 40 years, I still remember him as an unforgettable professor at Penn State.
