Alonzo Hooker Obituary

Alonzo Leslie Hooker VANCE, SC - Alonzo Leslie Hooker, 92, of North Charleston and Mill Creek, South Carolina, widower of Helen Steedly Hooker, entered into eternal rest Saturday, January 14, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 18, 2017 in North Charleston United Methodist Church, 1125 E. Montague Avenue, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Hunters Chapel Baptist Churchyard, Hunters Chapel Community, SC, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road. Al was born May 7, 1924 in Canton, North Carolina. He was the son of Willie Fuller Hooker and Edith Estelle Herndon Hooker. Al attended schools in North, South Carolina and Branchville, South Carolina. He was a veteran of the US Army, and served in World War II in Germany in the 89th Infantry Division, Calvary Reconn Troop. He was honorably discharged in June of 1945. He retired from Civil Service in 1980 after 35 years at the Charleston Army Depot and the Naval Weapons Station. Al then worked in the private sector as a project manager and consultant in several private engineering firms. In retirement, he enjoyed his home on Lake Marion at Mill Creek, SC. He was a longtime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, IEEE, and the Elks Lodge. Mr. Hooker was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen; a daughter, Beverly Gail; and three sisters: Martha June Hooker, Gwelma Plummer, and Frances Neill. He is survived by his three daughters: June H. Bunch (Dexter), Stephanie Coulter (Guy Moreland), and Brenda Hood (Gene); son, Rodney Hooker (Jenny); sister, Willie Lou Jackson; two brothers: Tommy Hooker and Buddy Hooker; sister-in-law, Betty Steedly; eleven grandchildren: Darcie Mullinax, Heath Hood, Allyson Hood Wood, Kimberly Drake, Duncan Bunch, Anna Bunch, Maggie Kindt, Ashton Pavlischek, Shannon Coulter, Tabitha Carter, and Corey Coulter; two step-grandchildren: Bobby Adams and Jennifer Adams; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Noah Drake, Isabella Drake, Caleb Vestrand, Taylor Wood, Ty Wood, Trace Wood, Luke Delpit, Tristan Carter, Logan Carter, Landon Carter, Kam Mullinax, Brooks Mullinax, Shepherd Bunch, Dax Bunch, and Rhiannon Passarini. The family extends their many thanks to Heather DeLong and Amber Garvin and Amedisys of Walterboro for their compassionate Hospice Care. Mr. Hooker was a very nice man who I met once at his home on the lake when Rodney invited me up to stay for a weekend of golf. We had a great time that weekend and it was a privilege and pleasure to meet Mr. Hooker. I was very sorry to hear of his passing this past weekend. I will keep Mr. Hooker and your family in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. May your dad rest in peace Rodney! From your old golfing buddy Joe.
