for Carl Dephouse

Not sure what to say?

November 18, 2012

The memories come flooding back as we remember the first time that we met you at 14th CRChurch when we were both members there and all of the times that we saw you throughout the years in Holland. Carl will be remembered for his musical excellence and his kindness toward students and friends. Our sympathy and prayers go out to you, Marg and your family. Jack and Ann Prins

I knew him as a teacher, a fellow Wolverine, even as a colleague. During my first few years out of high school, whenever I attended a music function and the conversation turned to our homes, I'd mention Holland, and people would knowingly smile and say, “did you play for Henry Vander Linde?”. When I said no (which wasn't precisely true--I did play a couple seasons in American Legion Band), I went to Holland High School and played for Carl Dephouse, they'd almost act disappointed. They shouldn't have. I had the privilege of playing in a great high school band led by someone who cared deeply about the music and who inspires me to keep playing even today.

I learned of Carl's passing at 3:00 pm on Thursday afternoon after a day of meetings. The time is significant because at 6:00 pm, I was scheduled to audition for the principal trombone chair in the orchestra I've played second trombone in for seven years. Up to that point I hadn't felt up to the task. My solo sounded sloppy, and my excerpts ragged. No matter. After I recovered from the initial shock, it was clear what I had to do. I packed up my horn and my music, went to my audition, and knocked everyone's socks off on the solo (Visions of Light by Eric Ewazen) and the excerpts (Mozart Tuba Mirum, Mahler 3, Ride of the Valkyries, and Bolero).

Yes, the music matters. Deeply.

Thank you, Mr. Dephouse.

I remember Mr. Dephouse so fondly . What a great teacher! I had him for band and have thought of him so many times through the years in raising my own children. I have confessed to them that Mr. Dephouse would call me "Jaws" since I talked out of turn so frequently. Now in reading of his going to be with the Lord, I can see where his kindness and patience stemmed from - his relationship with Jesus. Now he sees Him.
I still play my clarinet and can see him teach me in my minds eye... May God give your family peace at this time.

Mr.Dephouse played a big part in my life.I had him for a band teacher at E.E.Fell Jr.High and at Holland High. He "pushed" me as well as other band members to bring out their musical talents in them.In my eyes he was a perfectionist and very dedicated to his students. I also had great respect for him as he did for every student he would teach.I think I seen him once since High School, but always thought of him when I would pick up and play the "Ole Trumpet" My deepest condolences to the Family.

Dear Mrs Dephouse & family, I am so sorry to hear of Mr Dephouse's passing. My family lived down the street from you (West 15th) in the early 70's & I babysat your 2 older boys a few times. Mr Dephouse was a wonderful man & I have many happy memories of being in band my one & only year in the HHS band (1971-1972). He made us work hard and helped us understand how worthwhile the effort was. When I've had the opportunity to reunite with HHS class members, Mr Dephouse's name always enters the conversation. He made such a positive impact on so many students throughout the years.
I pray that you will have the comfort of our heavenly Father during this sad time in your lives.

To Carl's wife and family,
When I was in high school I had no knowledge of the possiblities of a career in music. When I was invited to be part of the MSBOA State Honors Band, my band director arranged for Carl to give me a ride to MSU for the rehearsal. Henry VanderLinde was conducting; this was a wonderful experience made possible only through the ride given me. The following year, again invited, again without transportation, Carl picked me up to give me a ride to the rehearsal. The conversation was so encouraging. I so appreciate Carl helping to open the doors to music education and performance to me. I can only say "Thank you". God bless you all.

Carl's family and friends will be in my prayers as you deal with the grief of the passing of a family member and friend. I worked on the equipment staff with Carl before the Russian trip. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the trip due to family matters. I will always remember his pleasant attitude and eager helpfulness.

Our personal regrets and condolences to Carl's family. He was a member of the finest band ever assembled at the University of Michigan. Our 1961 tour of the Soviet Union, Middle East and then a return to Iron Curtain Countries set a benchmark which will never be equaled. A special group of people who achieved a remarkable mission. Deepest regrets, Charles and Ruth Martyn, 1961 Tour Band Concertmaster.

Mr. Dephouse was my band teacher at E.E. Fell Jr. High School and Holland High School. Everyone loved him. Sure, we gave him a hard time, like kids do... talking and laughing... making noise when he was working out kinks with one singular section. But, all the kids liked and respected him. He was extremely kind. I have many fond memories of those years in band. Hearing of his too soon passing makes me very sad. Please accept my sincere condolences.
