Stanley Karesh Obituary

Dr. Stanley Herbert Karesh CHARLESTON - Dr. Stanley Herbert Karesh passed away peacefully at home on Saturday night, October 27, 2012, three days before his 91st birthday. He was the husband of Charlot Marks Karesh. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Stanley H. Karesh are invited to attend his funeral service on Monday, October 29, 2012 in Synagogue Emanu-El, 5 Windsor Drive, Charleston, SC at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Emanu-El Cemetery, "Maryville". Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Dr. Karesh was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on October 30, 1921, to Charlestonians Alex Karesh and Leslie Feinberg Karesh and was brought to Charleston at one month old. He attended James Simmons Elementary and graduated from Charleston High School in 1938 and from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland in 1943. After serving in the US Naval Reserve Dental Corps during World War II, he practiced dentistry in Charleston until he retired in 1994. Dr. Karesh was Clinical Associate in the Department of Crown and Bridge and Special Lecturer on Practice Management at the College of Dental Medicine of the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Past President of the Coastal District Dental Society and the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He lectured extensively and was published in the US and abroad. Dr. Karesh was the youngest founding member of Synagogue Emanu-El in 1946, a founding and lifetime member of the advisory board of the Yaschik-Arnold Jewish Studies Program of the College of Charleston and a past President of the Charleston Cancer Society. Not only was Dr. Karesh the "dentists' dentist", he was a gentle man, a gentleman, and an intellect who loved studying everything, especially dentistry and Jewish history and philosophy. He was a mentor to many younger dentists. He is survived by his wife, Charlot Marks Karesh of Charleston, SC; three daughters, Fern Karesh Hurst (Dr. Peter Rubin), Gail Karesh Kassan (Dr. Stuart) and Jane Karesh; his grandchildren, Alex Hurst, Amanda Hurst Hirsh (Bret), Michael Kassan (Lorelei) and Merrill Kassan; a great-granddaughter, Sophia Kassan and two sisters, Sandra Schwartz and Phyllis Tanenbaum (Louis). He is also survived by nieces and nephews. The family thanks Michele Blair, Cheryl Tyler, Krystle Whetsell and Jasmine Englebert for their loving care.
