Elsie Wolff

Elsie Wolff COLUMBIA, SC - Elsie Wolff, 88, whose active life and propensity for friendships touched many people, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013. The former Elsie Ruth Benenson was born in 1924 in Atmore, Alabama, the youngest of six children. She graduated from Louisiana State University in 1945 with a Bachelor's degree in business and with life-long friends from Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. Her spirit of adventure and love of all things fashion propelled her to New York City, where she became a buyer for Arnold Constable department store - a job she loved - and an in-store model. She was the widow of Louis M. Wolff of Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle & Wolff (LBC&W) architects and engineers. Elsie and Louis met in 1952 and married five months later. In their 25 years together they had four beloved children, built their dream home, entertained on a grand scale and traveled extensively. Elsie loved music and dancing, and had been an avid bridge and tennis player. She was an active member of the Tree of Life Temple and Sisterhood. She supported the arts and was a member of the Town Theatre, the Columbia Lyric Opera, and the Columbia Museum of Art. She worked tirelessly until last year for the Columbia Music Festival, which in 1985 honored her with its annual James M. Perry Lyre Award for volunteer service and named her a lifetime member of the Board of Directors. Elsie loved making friends and always remembered birthdays and special occasions with cards and gifts. She was famous for her pound cake and "jelly cookies." She will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, her high energy, her positive outlook, her style and flair, and her big smile and green eyes. Surviving are two daughters, Terri Kaufman (Vernon Dunning) of Rockville, MD and Frances O'Reilly of Bethesda, MD; two sons, H. Michael Wolff (Laurie) of Bethesda, MD and D. Bruce Wolff of Columbia; and three grandsons, Alex Kaufman, Louis Wolff and Jordan Wolff. Graveside services will be Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery, Gadsden Street. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge. Following the service, the family will receive friends for a celebration of Elsie's life at the Wolff home, 6336 Westshore Road, Columbia, SC 29206. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tree of Life Temple, 6719 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206 or the Columbia Music Festival Association, 914 Pulaski Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Memories and condolences may be added online at www.dunbarfuneral.com.
