James Bryant Obituary

James Bryant MONROE, NC - Retired Colonel James Carlisle Bryant, 80, formerly of Hanahan, SC, went to live with Jesus on Saturday, February 16, 2013. He was born on April 17, 1932 in Tubeville, SC, the oldest child of James Ernest and Lizzie Jane Bryant. After graduating as an Army ROTC cadet at the Citadel in 1956, he married Beverly Sherwood Dotterer and enlisted in the Army. As a civilian, he worked as a civil engineer at the Naval Weapon Station in Goose Creek, SC, and continued his military career in the Army Reserves, retiring from both positions after 32 years of service. As Commander of the 1182nd US Army Transportation Terminal Unit A, Col. Bryant led is unit to receive the "Outstanding Small Unit Award of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States" in 1977-1978. Jim was a devoted Christian who received an award for his outstanding leadership of his Sunday School Class at Highland Park Baptist Church. When he was not involved in work or church, you would find him in his garden tending his vegetables or in the creek at Edisto, fishing. In addition to his parents, Col. Bryant is preceded in death by his sister, Cornelia Welch; son, Jimmy and, daughter, Caroline. Surviving are his wife, Beverly Bryant; daughters, Dr. Jane Neese (Ken) of Monroe, NC and Barbara Bryant Herrera (Maribel) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Thomas and Annie Neese and Sienna Bryant Herrera; sisters Nell Hines (Ed) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Virginia McNeil (Dan) of Florence, SC, Jane Moore (Charles) or Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Jerry Holiday (Jimmy) of Sumter, SC; brother-in-law, John Brinson Dotterer, Jr. (Rebecca) of Columbia, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM, Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Dr. Hanahan, SC 29410 with a military graveside service to follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30 PM. Jim's family would like to thank the Monroe Square staff for their loving care during his illness as well as the compassionate care from Diane and Anina who provided excellent hospice nursing and bedside care during Jim's later days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or Central United Methodist Church, 801 South Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112. Frampton Creek will not be the same without Jim to watch over it and provide the latest fishing report. We are all grateful for our memories of visiting with him and for his gracious hospitality. He was quite a guy.
