THE HONORABLE CLARENCE E. SINGLETARY MONCKS CORNER - The Honorable Clarence Edward Singletary, retired Ninth Circuit Court Judge, and husband of Pollie Lacour Singletary, died Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at age 96. Arrangements will be private, according to DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Doc Williams SPCA, 500 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, SC, 29461. Judge Singletary was born in Pinopolis, Berkeley County, South Carolina on March 16, 1918, the ninth child of ten born to Joseph M. and Charlotte Mims Singletary. A graduate of the College of Charleston in 1940, he served as a US Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean during WW II. Following his discharge in 1945, Judge Singletary continued his education at the University of Michigan Law School, receiving his LL.B. Degree in 1948. He returned to Charleston and began the practice of law. He met Pollie Obear Lacour of Atlanta, Ga., and they were married in August, 1950. He was elected to and served in the SC House of Representatives from 1960-61, at which time he was elected Judge of the Ninth Circuit. During the time he spent on the bench, Judge Singletary was involved in many cases that influenced the laws of our state, and rulings he made are still referenced. Judge Singletary retired in 1980. Clarence looked at life as an adventure and felt that he had the perfect partner to share it with. He served as the attorney for the Town of Mt. Pleasant for 4 years in the early 1950's, and taught Law for a time at the Citadel. Judge Singletary attended the National College of State Trial Judges in 1964, and returned in 1970 to serve as a Faculty Advisor. He was a member of The Society of Barristers, Phi Delta Phi Fraternity, and the US Coast Guard Reserves. He was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church and the Carolina Yacht Club. Judge Singletary is survived by his wife of Moncks Corner; two daughters, Kathryn H. Singletary and Judith S. Lanier, both of Moncks Corner; two grandchildren, James Mitchell Lanier, Jr., and his wife, Kristen, of Moncks Corner; and Clarence Edward "Clay" Singletary, III, of Charleston; and one great-grandchild, James Mitchell Lanier, III; also a host of loving nieces, nephews cousins around the world. Judge Singletary was pre-deceased by his son, C. Edward Singletary, Jr. The family extends a grateful thanks to his caregivers, Barbara Carol Winns, Sueanna Bou-Sleiman, Catasha Bowens, Frances Middleton and Shirley Gavin for their care and kindness.
