Virginia Self Obituary

Virginia Preston Self GREENWOOD, SC - Virginia Preston Self, 67, long time Chair of the Self Family Foundation Board of Trustees, died at Self Regional Healthcare November 29, 2013. Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late James (Jim) C. Self and Virginia Turner Self. She graduated from Ashley Hall School in Charleston, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Converse College, Spartanburg and was also a graduate of the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design, San Francisco. An active philanthropist, she served on many nonprofit boards including Converse College, the South Carolina Arts Commission, The Greenwood Museum, Cambridge Academy, the Greenwood Community Theater, the Greenwood Methodist Home Foundation, and the Greenwood Genetic Center Foundation. Through her work with the South Carolina Arts Commission, Ms. Self was a passionate advocate for the arts in rural South Carolina. She was also an early leader in promoting Montessori education in the public schools of South Carolina. Ms. Self also served on several boards related to her family businesses to include Greenwood Mills, Inc, Greenwood Motor Lines, and Greenwood Development Corporation. Survivors include her daughter, Cade Brennan Jackson and husband Adam, of Asheville NC; a brother William Mathews Self of Greenwood; a sister Sally E. Self, M.D. of Charleston and friend, Mary White. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to the Arts Council of Greenwood, 120 Main Street, Greenwood SC 29646 or the Greenwood Humane Society, Post Office Box 49776, Greenwood SC 29649.
