Ada Austin Johnson CHARLESTON - Ada Austin Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2014 at her residence in Charleston. Born in 1932 in Maxton, NC, she was the daughter of the late David McBryde and Ada Livingston Austin. She obtained her Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina, her Master's degree from the University of North Carolina and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in comparative literature. She was a professor of Spanish and French at several local colleges and universities, including Charleston Southern, where she was the head of the foreign language department. She had great passions for good food, music, languages, laughter, travel and people. She is predeceased by a daughter, Harriet McBryde Johnson of Charleston, SC and granddaughter, Rachel McBryde Kam-Johnson of Summerville, SC. Dr. Johnson is survived by her husband, Dr. David D. Johnson of the home; a daughter, Beth Ross Johnson of Asheville, NC; a son MacBryde Johnson and wife Marcia Rey of Oakland, CA; a son Dr. Eric Johnson of Milaca, MN; and son Ross Johnson of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Hazel Conway and husband Christian of Asheville, NC, Megan Kam-Johnson of Summerville, SC and David Johnson of Folly Beach, SC. The family wishes to express profound thanks and appreciation to Ms. Rosa Wilson for all of the hard work, dedication and excellent care for the past 13 years and to the Hospice foundation of South Carolina for their outstanding care and compassion. Dr. Johnson was a long-time volunteer and usher at Spoleto Festival, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Ada Johnson to Spoleto Festival USA, 14 George Street Charleston, SC 29401, attention: Neil Benish.
