Artes Welcker Clair Charleston - Artes Welcker Clair, 79, of West Ashley, Charleston, beloved wife of Francis P. Clair, died at home on Thursday, August 9, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Clair are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Monday, with a 5:00 PM Rosary, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Artes was born to Lee and Ella Nora Welcker on December 22, 1938 in Charleston. She began her career as secretary of Bishop England High School and after the birth of her children, returned to the work force at C & S Bank where she worked for 16 years. Artes continued her career as a Financial Administrator at Kidney Centers of Charleston where she retired in 2006. Artes sought to live her Catholic faith to the fullest through her complete devotion to her family. For Artes, nothing could make a day better than having her whole family gathered around her table for Sunday dinner. She never missed a chance to celebrate life's many milestones with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Despite her busy schedule as a mom of three children, Artes still found time to devote to various volunteer positions within the community. Her volunteer positions included Athletic Director of Blessed Sacrament School, Girl Scout leader, team mom, room mom, librarian at Bishop McGuinness High School, and numerous other roles. In the years following her retirement she was member of the linen committee and a Eucharistic minister at Blessed Sacrament Church. She continued to serve her community as an active member and past officer of the Heathwood/Olde Towne Neighborhood Association. She received a Golden Cow award from the West Of paper in honor of her volunteer work supporting her Neighborhood Association and Lenevar playground. In addition to her husband of 58 years she is survived by her three children: Joe Clair (Cheryl), Alicia Crosby (Kevin), Marcy Blitch (Ed); six grandchildren: Caroline and Collin Clair, Emma and Katie Blitch, Jessie and Baxley Crosby (wife Alyssa); Two great-grandchildren: Callie and Harper Crosby all of Charleston. She also is survived by two sisters: Martha Fox and Bonnie Edenfield (Randy); one brother: Barry Welcker (Dana).
