Ethel Grimball Obituary

GRIMBALL, Ethel Educator and Long-time Community Activist Dies Mrs. Ethel J. Grimball, late of Wadmalaw Island, SC, died this past Saturday at Roper Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Grimball was a 1954 graduate of Claflin University, a United Methodist-related university located in Orangeburg, SC. She taught at St. Helena High School in Frogmore, SC for two years immediately following her graduation, then returned to Charleston County to join the late Mrs. Septima Clark, Mrs. Bernice Robinson, and Mrs. Brewer as an instructor in the Citizenship Schools of Johns, Wadmalaw and Edisto islands. She was employed by the Charleston County Economic Opportunity Commission for fourteen years, beginning as the center supervisor for the John's Island Head Start Center, and eventually being promoted to director of programs. Subsequently, she was the deputy director of the SC Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers Organization, director of programs for the Charleston County Human Services Commission, and her last employment was with Our Lady of Mercy as its program coordinator. One of Mrs. Grimball's great passions was her love for the people of the Sea Island community that nurtured her during her formative years. She was resolute in her belief that we are our brothers' and sisters' keepers, and this informed her work in the community. She spoke truth to the powers that be on behalf of those who were without voice. She served on numerous community boards and agencies to help shape policies and procedures that impacted the poor, underprivileged, elderly and youth. Mrs. Grimball took to heart the statement of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that …any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and is not concerned with the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them, and the social conditions that cripple them, is a dry-as-dust religion. She instituted many programs in her church to extend its outreach and mission to the surrounding community. In her 40 plus years of community activism, Mrs. Grimball was the recipient of numerous awards for her dedication and commitment to the people of the Sea Island community and the citizens of South Carolina. Mrs. Grimball leaves to mourn her passing, her husband and companion of 52 years, Gilbert St. Julian Grimball; her four children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six siblings, and a multitude of other relatives and friends. To the Family of Ethel Grimball,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Mrs. Ethel Grimball. I only knew her through her daughter, Gilberta's, descriptions of her, but that was enough for me to admire the life she lived. Her daughter is a living testimony as to the goodness and Godliness of her spirit, and the world is better for her having been a part of it. May you all forever celebrate the life and love of Ethel Grimball, and may the peace of God be with you all.

Love,

I just wanted to express my deepest sympathy to the family during this difficult time. I have always known about the closeness of the family , but I observed the love and care that you gave to her when she needed it most. Sickness bings out the best in family and all of you stood up strongly. She leaves a legacy of strong, committed, and determined children who will continue to promote many of her ideals. By the way, the grands ain't too bad either. May God continue to bless all of you as you adjust.

To The Grimball & Jenkins Family:
TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR ALL THE GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE AND WE ARE THANKFUL TO HAVE HAD AN AMBASSADOR LIKE MS. GRIMBALL. SHE WAS MORE THAN JUST A FRIEND TO SOME OF US, SHE WAS A PERSON WITH A "BIG HEART". SHE HAS TOUCHED THE LIVES OF MANY THROUGHOUT THE SEA ISLANDS AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS AND I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF GRIEVING HEARTS RIGHT ABOUT NOW. WEEPING MAY ENDURE FOR A NIGHT BUT JOY, UNSPEAKABLE JOY COMES IN THE MORNING. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE BEEN AROUND MS. GRIMBALL IN WESLEY BUT I ENJOYED THE TIME I WAS CROWNED "MISS OMICROM" AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING AROUND MS. GRIMBALL AND ALL OF HER SISTERS WHO WAS IN THE CLUB. I REALLY GOT TO KNOW ALL OF THEM WHEN I SPENT THE WEEKEND AT ATLANTIC BEACH AFTER I WAS CROWNED. SO TO THE FAMILY, KEEP YOUR HANDS IN GODS HAND AND HE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH THIS DIFFICULT TIMES AND KNOW THAT MY FAMILY AND I WILL KEEP YOU IN OUR CONSTANT PRAYER. BE BLESSED AND KNOW THAT MS. GRIMBALL IS WALKING THE STREETS THAT ARE PAVED WITH "GOLD".

Grimball Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Perhaps on Saturday, Mother Grimball heard the Lord say, "Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." [Matt 11:28], and answered. She will be sorely missed, but is no longer "heavy ladened". Be encouraged Grimball Family. It is evident that you love her, but God loves her best. Deepest Sympathy.

Dear Jackie:

I wish once again to express my deepest sympathy to you and the rest of the family on this sad occasion. Mrs. Grimball was one of my star patients. It was my special privelege to care for her over many years. She honored me by trusting me unreservedly. I shall always remember her. My consolation to you and the others is to remind you that at a time like this "there is a balm in Gilead" that soothes the broken heart. I hold you in my prayers.

She will be missed, I know, but rest assured that her time here with us was inspiring and serves as the perfect example for all of us to follow.

No more suffering no more pain....
Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance....
May the love of God sustain you and His perfect peace comfort you.
May you find peace in this time of sorrow and strength through the beautiful memories of your love one.

To The Family of "Ms. Abby":
It was with immense sadness that I heard of Ms. Abby's passing as she was not just a woman I admired and respected, but also someone I considered a friend. Ever since I sent her a word of kindness many years ago, she was always there for me with words of encouragement, a friendly smile, and a warm embrace. I valued her insight and wisdom as though she was my own grandmother. Although saddened that I can not be home at this time, please know that she is forever in your hearts, as well as in my heart, and we will see her again. In every sunrise, in every smile, and in every random miracle of each day, there she will be in radiant glory. My condolences to the entire Jenkins/Grimball family and the family of Wesley U.M.
