Irvin Elizabeth Mixon Thomas BEAUFORT, SC - Irvin Elizabeth Mixon Thomas, affectionately known as Betty, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at her home in Beaufort, South Carolina. She was born in Walterboro, South Carolina on October 18, 1930 at the old Charles Esdorn Hospital, the daughter of Irvin Barto Mixon and Veda Ulmer Mixon Long. She was the wife of Jeff Davis Thomas, Jr. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Marilyn Mixon Dryman. She and Jeff have 3 children; Fair and Robert Ariail, Michael and Veronica Thomas, Jeff David and Gena Thomas. There are 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Her brother, Dr. John Delano Mixon and Caroline of Gainsville, Georgia is her only surviving sibling. Betty graduated from old Hampton High School in 1947 and Limestone College in Gaffney with a B.A. in 1951. In 1974, she received a Masters from USC in Columbia. She taught school for 31 years at several schools including Pinewood Elementary in Pinewood, South Carolina, Center Point Elementary in Birmingham, Alabama, American School in Kaiserslatern, Germany, and retired from Hampton Elementary School in 1991. Betty was a member of the former Delta Kappa Gamma, serving in local and district in many capacities. Also A-11 Retired Teachers Association Hampton County Historical Society. Betty loved teaching school and other educational activities, but she loved one thing more, her church at First Baptist of Varnville and her previous church, First Baptist of Hampton. She was very active in WMU, starting the Morning One at Varnville church. She taught Sunday School for more than 65 years. Betty will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was a proud, devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Friends are invited to celebrate the life of Betty on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina with burial following at the Hampton Cemetery.
