Joseph Franklin Wooten Varnville, SC - Joseph Franklin Wooten of Varnville died early Sunday morning at his home. Mr. Wooten was born in Hampton County October 24, 1929, the son of the late John and Lettie Hadwin Wooten. He retired from Ruscon Construction Company in Charleston, S.C. after 50 years as superintendent of construction. The South Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded him the Craftsmanship Award for Outstanding Construction Supervision of the Kiawah Island Inn (1979). In 1981 the Charleston Chapter ASAC awarded him the superintendent of the year award of distinction. During his tenure at Ruscon he provided oversight to the renovation of many historic churches in Charleston including St. Phillips, St. John the Baptist, and 2nd Presbyterian Church and St. Helena Church in Beaufort. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and passionate gardener. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy. Surviving are: his wife of 68 years, Rosa Sineath Wooten of Varnville; daughter, Linda Mixson Kelly and husband Gerald of Varnville; son, Joseph Marion Wooten and wife Ellie of Orangeburg, SC; son, Donald Hugh Wooten and wife Debra of Varnville; grandchildren: Sonya Dempsey, Tonya Hayden, Amanda Jones, Melanie Drawdy, Johnathan Wooten and Aaron Rowell; great-grandchildren Jillian and Jarrett Velazquez, Dylan and Brandon Hayden, Christopher and Lexi Jones, Bryce and Braxton Drawdy, Owen Wooten, Lillie Rowell, Austin Kelly; brothers: Dean Wooten of Springfield, Ga; Roy Wooten of Scotia, SC, sister, Helouise Deloach of Hampton, SC. He is predeceased by brothers: John Wooten of Hampton; Nathan Wooten of Estill, SC, Ray Wooten of Hampton, SC; sisters: Marie Nix of Furman, SC; Juanita Warren of Hampton, SC, and Clotiel Nunnaly of Sylvania, Ga. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton, with burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home.
