Marilyn Davis SUMMERVILLE - Marilyn Davis, a counselor and nursing educator, died Thursday Feb. 14 2013, at the Village of Summerville. She was 87. Burial will be private, with Parks Funeral Home of Summerville in charge. Family members will arrange a memorial at a later date. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion Lorraine G. Zix, by her sister Pauline Davis McCoy and her brother Jack W. Davis. She is survived by her sister Eloise Davis Allison of Chapel Hill, NC and her sister-in-law Virginia Moore Davis of Hilton Head, SC She is also survived by nieces Christine Allison Jones of Silver Lake, Ohio; Mary Allison Beck of Chapel Hill; and Bronwyn Allison Taylor of Silver Lake; and by nephews Jack W. Davis Jr. of New Orleans, Stephen E. Davis of Nashville and Mark R. Davis of Hilton Head - all of whom loved her as "Meme." She also leaves behind her close friend DeeDee Glover and the caring staff at the Village of Summerville. Miss Davis was born July 20, 1925 in the Welsh community of Oak Hill, Ohio, daughter of Mary Etta Jones Davis and John E. Davis. She majored in health and physical education at the University of Cincinnati and took her first job at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, where she taught physical education, practiced counseling and met Miss Zix. They moved to Syracuse, NY, where Miss Davis received a master's degree in social work at Syracuse University and worked as a truant officer and where Miss Zix finished a master's degree. They went back to Cincinnati, where Miss Zix worked while Miss Davis went to Indiana University for a second master's degree, in guidance counseling. She worked as a teacher and counselor. She was a certified teacher, held a guidance and counseling certificate, and was a licensed social worker. They also worked and lived in the Nashville, TN area. In the Charleston area, where they moved several decades ago, Miss Zix was an associate professor at MUSC College of Nursing and Ms. Davis was a teacher. They lived in North Charleston and moved to Summerville. She loved to play golf; enjoyed her animals, particularly their golden retriever Beau, and Simi and their other Siamese cats; and lived life to its fullest.
