Jerry Hanscum Obituary

Jerry Daniel Hanscum SEABROOK ISLAND, SC - Jerry Daniel Hanscum, most recently of Seabrook Island, SC, passed away after a long decline on October 27, 2016, in Willoughby, Ohio. He was 76-years-old. Jerry was the eldest of four children born on June 10, 1940 in Afton, Wyoming, to Charles Wright Hanscum and Helena Lynch Hanscum. He attended St. Mary's High School in Cheyenne, received a B.S. in Business Administration (Cum Laude) with an Accounting Major from Marquette University (1958-62), and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1965. He became Partner in Tax at Coopers & Lybrand in 1970, working 32 years for the firm in the Detroit, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids and Akron/Cleveland offices. During these years, he also served on the faculty of Marquette and Grand Valley State Universities, teaching taxation. He then added a few more years as a tax lawyer at Warner, Norcross and Judd back in Detroit. Jerry retired to Seabrook Island, SC in 2000 where he enjoyed golf and was a voracious reader. Although he left Wyoming at the age of 18, Wyoming never left him - he was known to wear his cowboy boots and bold western shirts to many a function. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Robin (Hanscom) Hanscum; children, Marisa Dietsche, Alison Hanscum and Robert Hanscum; grandchildren, Zachary and Hali Dietsche and Olivia and Delilah Hanscum; sister, Mary Crooks of Denver, CO; and brother, Art Hanscum of Tampa, FL. One brother, Robert, preceded him in death in 1968. Anyone wishing to honor his memory may make a donation the National Parkinson's Foundation or to the Alzheimer's Association.
