Hugh O'Brien SUMMERVILLE, SC - Hugh R. O'Brien, 82, of Summerville, SC and formerly of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2013, at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, SC. He was born Nov. 18, 1930, in Colver, PA, a son of the late John M. and Grace (Scally) O'Brien, and was married to the late Mary B. (Strollo) O'Brien, who died Aug. 19, 1994. Hugh was a graduate of Cambria County High School in 1948 and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. In 1957, he earned a Bachelor's degree from St. Francis College, Loretto, PA and he earned a Master's degree and an advanced certificate in Library Science and Administration both from the University of Pittsburgh. Hugh was an Assistant Professor in English at St. Francis College before moving on to Shippensburg University in 1967, where he was the Director of Acquisitions and Collection Management until 1989. After leaving Shippensburg University, Hugh worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he was the Acquisition Librarian-Information Specialist for the US Treasury Department. From 1991 until his retirement in 1994, Hugh worked for the Passaic County Community College in New Jersey, where he was the Assistant Director of the Learning Resource Center. Hugh always enjoyed learning and teaching and completed graduate courses in law, education and library administration at Villanova University, Indiana University of PA, and University of Maryland, respectively. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Summerville and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlisle. Hugh was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, University of Pittsburgh Alumni and AARP. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid sports fan and loved to root for his beloved Pittsburgh sports teams. He is survived by six daughters; Mary G. O'Brien of Virginia Beach, VA, Terry A. O'Brien of Summerville, SC, Kathleen R. O'Brien of Carlisle, Maureen E. O'Brien Dermott (and husband, Thomas Dermott) of Carlisle, Eileen R. O'Brien Sweeney (and husband, Matthew Sweeney) of Plainfield, CT and Erin A. O'Brien of Central Village, CT. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; Austin, Matthew, Dylan and Joshua Sourbeer; Mary Ellen, Shannon, and Sean Sweeney; and Cassidy Dermott, as well as, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Matthew and John (Jack) O'Brien, and sisters Grace Merritt, Mary Denning and Rita O'Brien. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Dr., Carlisle, with Rev. Dwight Schlaline officiating. Burial will be private in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Carlisle. A visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
