Marilyn Jean Kierspe SUMMERVILLE - Marilyn Jean McCracken Kierspe, 84, of Summerville, SC, died Thursday afternoon at the Hospice Center of Charleston. A celebration of her life will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday morning, July 8, 2014, at the Presbyterian Village in Summerville. A second service will follow at 4:00 PM in the Aiken First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Kierspe was born June 8, 1930, in Zanesville, OH, a daughter of the late Howard and Doris Smith McCracken. She graduated cum laude from Ohio State University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Mirrors & Chimes, a women's honorary society. Following college, she taught in Cleveland Heights schools for three years. In 1955, she married George R. Kierspe. They moved to Aiken and became members of the Aiken First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Kierspe taught at the Aiken Day School, and then later served as a resource expert for the Aiken County School District. She continued her interest in music by serving as the accompanist for many of the early Aiken Community Playhouse musicals. Mrs. Kierspe served as a board member and co-president of the Aiken County Symphony Guild, and she also served as a board member and president of the Friends of the Aiken County Museum. As a member of Chapter B, P.E.O., she served several terms as president. She enjoyed playing tennis, hiking, backpacking, and traveling, and in 2003, she completed her trips to all seven continents by sailing to Antarctica. Mrs. Kierspe was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Richard, and Glenn McCracken. Surviving are, her husband, George R. Kierspe; four sons, George Howard and his wife, Nancy, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, David and his wife, Sherry, of North Augusta, Tom and his wife, Kay, of Ravenel, and John and his wife, Ivette, of Beijing, China; six grandchildren, Brittany (Caleb) Poston, Kristin (Kenneth) Cordray, Chase (Annabeth) Kierspe, and Hillary, Caleb, and Jonathan Kierspe; and five great grandchildren, Noah, Emma, & Selah Poston, and Trenham & Rhett Cordray. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the George & Jean Kierspe Studio Art Program Endowment Fund or the George & Jean Kierspe Wellness Center Program Endowment Fund at USC Aiken.
