Floyd Chitty Obituary


CHITTY, Floyd HARTSVILLE, SC - Floyd C. Bo Chitty, 87, of Hartsville passed away Sunday March 26, 2006 after a short illness. Graveside services were held in Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville Wednesday March 29 at 2:00 PM, officiated by the Rev. Tony Medlin. Mr. Chitty was born in Groveland, GA January 15, 1919. He was the son of the late Floride Garris Chitty and Floyd Clemson Chitty Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife Blanche Tedder Chitty of Hartsville, his son Calvin Garris Chitty, and sister Irene Chitty Lynn of Columbia. He is survived by one son Floyd C. Chitty III and family of Smyrna, GA; granddaughter Joella Potts and great grandson John Murray Potts of Atlanta; great granddaughter Elizabeth Lane Sheldon of Marietta, GA; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, dedicated neighbors and friends. Mr. Chitty was a graduate of Hartsville High School and a 1940 graduate of the Citadel with a BS in Civil Engineering. In his senior year he was Cadet Captain and the Commander of C Company. At the Citadel he was a member of the Summerall Guards elite precision drill team and he was on the schools training cadre for two years. He was a past President of the Brigadier Club, a past President of the Pee Dee Area Citadel Club, and a recipient of the Outstanding State Citadel Volunteer Award . He was the epitome of a true Citadel man, as fervent in donation as he was a promoter, recruiter, and friend of the Citadel. If you were one of Bo's Citadel boys, you were very special to him. A veteran of World War II, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers obtaining the rank of Major. His military service took him to both South America and Ascension Island. Mr. Chitty worked for Tomlinson Engineering Company and the SC State Highway Department before joining Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville in 1947. He retired from Sonoco as Chief - General Engineering in 1982 with over 35 years of service. Mr. Chitty was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Land Surveyor. Over the years he participated in many civic and charitable organizations. He was a member of the Byerly Hospital Board of Trustees and served as chairman of the building committee. He was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was a District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America and Camporee Director of the Pee Dee Area Boy Scouts. He was a Director of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, and District 6 Governor of the Exchange Club in SC. He initiated bringing Little Boys Baseball to the Hartsville area and he served as Commissioner- Hartsville Little Boys Baseball and Director State District 5. Memorials may be made in his name to: St. Luke United Methodist Church, Carolina Children's Home, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY, the American Parkinson Disease Association, the Citadel Brigadier Foundation, or the Citadel Developmental Foundation.
