I always had glimpses of Mr. Marion in my childhood growing up in Newton-Conover. Always smiling and an infectious gufaw of a laugh. There was something about him that just clicked with me. When he needed extra care, I began visiting with him on almost a weekly basis after church. In researching something to talk to him about (his memory of past events was uncanny), I discovered we are very distant cousins. I knew I loved that man for some reason! He reminded me alot of my own Pop (even our family dynamics are very similiar). And it is from that side of the family that I can trace him. Just like Pop, Mr. Marion and I could even sit and not talk, just sometimes holding hands, or Mr. Marion napping and me reading. Spending that time with him weekly helped twofold: I felt like I was getting additional time with my own Pop (was living in S.C. towards the end of his life) and to set the tone for my week. It put things in perspective: kindness, friendship, compassion, the need for humor (he told and loved great jokes-as Frances puts it "A real stitch"), dignity, love, the importance of telling a great story (Michael seems to have inherited this gene...true Scot!), as well as the presence and power of God in our lives. He was always a Southern Gentleman (a dying breed) with impeccable manners, a snappy dresser, and a compliment for the ladies. A real charmer! Mr. Marion was always grateful that I visited. He was sure to thank me and tell me he loved me. My heart was broken when he passed... I did not expect it at all. I continue to pray for Frances, Michael, Babs, Rose, Julia, Bev,Atea, Alice, and the rest of the family. I pray that they remember the funny things he did, the time he spent with them, his love of the mountains, his devotion to the church, and how proud he was of them and how much he truly loved them all. He was excited to talk about Frances, his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. When they were there, or he knew they were coming, he was beyond giddy with excitement. I still like to take him flowers and pay respects because just the short time I really knew him, he made such a huge impact on my outlook of life...especially what is truly important while we are here on this earth: letting those you care about know you love them, living in the moment/being present, extending compassion, kindness, and service to others, and being thankful for all God's blessings. I can't drink a smoothie without thinking of him and missing him MADLY!
I want to thank the family for being so willing to let me visit him and be an extra set of eyes to ensure the best care for him, for decorating his room for holidays, etc. His time in my life was truly a gift and I thank you for it.

I wish to pass on my deepest regrets for the loss of Mr. McDowell. He was a long time friend of my uncle Hanford, and was very generous to me regarding the use of his farm in the past. I will always remember this kindness of Mr.& Mrs. McDowell. May God's Blessings be on you at this time.

As a child growing up in the lumber business, I was fortunate to know Mac and become friends with Mike as well. It was always a special day when Mac would come by... A pair of gloves on a cold winter day, a cold drink and a snack as the hot July sun beat down on us packing lumber... He always knew exactly what to say, and when to say it. The perfect gentleman, friend, and mentor. He had the unique ability to make me feel like I was his favorite. Years later I discovered he made us all feel that way. Through his actions, and high standards, he and my father paved the road I am walking on today.

MacDowell Family - Jim and I were truly sorry to hear of the passing of Marion. Jim enjoyed their talks at BoJangles and we always enjoyed talking with you at Rock Barn. Marion always had a smile and something funny to say. I will always remember beautification day as the explanation for the times Frances was not with him during the times at BoJangles - such a nice way to say Frances is having her hair done. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. The loss of a loved one leaves us with such as void to fill, but cherish your loving memories and they will keep Marion with you forever in your hearts. With God behind us and His loving arms beneath us, we can bear whatever lies before us. May God grant you His mercy and peace.
