Cook, Joyce - Statesville  
Joyce Cook STATESVILLE - Regrettably, Joyce Ann Hicks Cook, 71, of Statesville, departed this life, Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Sardis Oaks Facility in Charlotte after a long illness. Being born in 1944 in Fairmont, West Virginia, she moved with family to Charlotte in 1960. While taking cooking classes at CPCC in the 1970's, she found her calling and subsequently spent many years in the hospitality industry in various capacities. Her deft touch in the kitchen will be missed by friends and family alike. Preceding her in death were her parents, John B. Hicks, Jr. and Eleanor Douglass Hicks. She was also predeceased in September 2014 by her life partner, Angelo Hondros, with whom she shared nearly 50 years. Left to cherish her memory is her brother, John Hicks of Charlotte and those she befriended. A memorial service for Joyce will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2015, in the chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home which is handling the arrangements. Dilley, George - Seminole  
Capt. George William Dilley, USMC SEMINOLE, FL - Capt. George William Dilley, USMC, 83, of Seminole, FL, died Wednesday morning, May 20, 2015, at Baycare Alliant Hospital in Dunedin, FL. Bill was born April 17, 1932 in Portland, OR, a son of Ruby Pribble Dilley and Cmdr. Luther Luke LaSalle Dilley, USN. He was a graduate of NC State University with a BS and MS in Animal Science. At 9 years old, Bill witnessed first-hand the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and later joined the USMC for 20 years serving in Korea and Vietnam. After another 20 years, he retired from the Farmers Home Administration. He helped start up Rash Christmas Tree Farm in West Jefferson, and served as interim director of the Valle Crucis Conference Center. He is predeceased by his first wife, Dot Rash Dilley of Valle Crucis and his sister Julianne Moon of Palm Harbor, FL. Surviving are his second wife, Collett Handstad Dilley of Seminole, FL and daughter, Kathryn Handstad of Lakeland, FL, his sister Patricia O'Neil of Downingtown, PA, and his and Dot's children, a daughter Dr. Patricia Dilley of Worcester, MA, and two sons John Dilley of Fort Collins, CO, and Lindsay Dilley of Lexington. Bill leaves behind six grandchildren, Ruth Hatch of Worcester, MA, Benjamin Hatch of Montreal, Rachel and Andrew Dilley of Lexington, Natalie Dilley of Roanoke, VA and Ursula Dilley of Brooklyn, NY. He leaves behind two daughters-in-law, Linda Lawing Dilley of Lexington, and Donna Canter Dilley, of Fort Collins, CO, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law. A memorial service will be held May 29 at Reese Funeral Home in Seminole, FL at 4:00 PM. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Lewis-Rash Cemetery in West Jefferson on June 20. Memorials may be directed to your favorite animal charity in Bill's name.

Herman, Dorothee - West Palm Beach  
Dorothee Schlessinger Herman CHARLOTTE - Dorothee Schlessinger Herman was born October 14, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. She died peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Presbyterian Hospital Hospice. Dorothee recently celebrated her 74th wedding anniversary with her loving husband, William Z. Herman, although she liked to call it her 75th. Their marriage lasted so long because it was based on love, honesty, loyalty and devotion. She was extremely happy about their recent move to Charlotte, NC from West Palm Beach, Florida. She said, "She couldn't believe how glad she was to have moved to Charlotte". They literally supported each other through the years, and were an inspiration to many. In addition to her husband, William Z. Herman, Dorothee is survived by her son, Lewis Herman and wife, Beth Wilkinson; daughter, Rae Zweigbaum and husband, Al; and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Ave., Salisbury, NC, with Rabbi Michael Shields officiating. Mooney, James - Concord  
Dr. James Charles Mooney CONCORD - Dr. James Charles Mooney, age 75, of Concord, NC went to be the Lord Sunday, May 24, 2015, after a year's battle with Merkel Cell Cancer. Dr. Mooney was born August 3, 1939 in Brantford, Ontario Canada. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Calton Mooney, a sister and brother in Canada, and niece, Jean Houston and husband, Jim, of Harrisburg. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Hugh Calton of Bostic, NC; and sisters-in-law, Louise Stikeleather of Charlotte, Sue Calton of Spartanburg, SC, and Martha Calton of Denver, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Mooney is a graduate of Piedmont Bible College, Guilford College, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and received his doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University in Madison, NJ. He pastored Southern Baptist churches in North and South Carolina before his retirement in 1990. A service of celebration will be held at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Rd., Charlotte on Wednesday, May 27. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. and the service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Coye Still and Dr. David Irish will officiate at the service. Lewis Hammond Mulkey DENVER - Lewis Hammond Mulkey, age 78, Denver, NC, passed away May 23, 2015, in the arms of his devoted wife of 59 years, Tommie Kelly Mulkey. He was predeceased by his father Cecil Raymond Mulkey, mother Mattalea Hammond Mulkey, brother Cecil R. Mulkey, Jr., grandmother Nancy Elizabeth Colley, sons-in-law Michael Patterson and David Piendel. He is survived by his children, Marc Mulkey (Marie), Denver, NC, Marian Piendel, Charlotte, NC, Melanie Patterson, Boone, NC, and Marsha Tate, Denver, NC; sister Anne Shelton (Harold), and brother Joe Mulkey; grandchildren, Brandon Mulkey, Spencer King, Jennifer Allison (Josh), and Samuel King; great-grandchildren, Braden Mulkey, Avery Spencer King, and Cooper Allison. Lewis was born April 1, 1937, in Walhalla, SC. He graduated from East Spencer High School and began his life's work as a water boy for Duke Power Company in power plant construction and achieved success as Superintendent, Power House Mechanics upon his retirement after 38 years of service. He loved singing, hunting, fishing, NASCAR, fixing things, gardening, and lake-living. A private family graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton, NC with Reverend Jimmy King officiating. Marian Lynn Douglas O'Bryan "Dougi" CHARLOTTE - Marian Lynn "Dougi" Douglas O'Bryan, 67, died on Sunday, May 24, 2015. A native Charlottean, she was born November 28, 1947 to the late Grace King and Paul Deward Douglas. She graduated from Garinger High School in 1966 and UNC-Chapel Hill in 1970. Later that year, she married her husband of 41 years, the late John Michael (Mike) O'Bryan. Dougi dedicated her life to serving and loving others. She cherished her family and friends and had a true gift for southern hospitality. She was a devoted wife and mom, an active member of Providence Presbyterian Church, a talented teacher, cook and gardener, and owner of The Magnolia Tree at Black Lion. She delighted in many special friendships, especially the Renovare girls and the shopper's guild. Her greatest joy was being GeeGee to her three precious granddaughters, who will miss her dearly. She is survived by her son Douglas and wife Andi, and granddaughters Grace, Charlotte and Sally. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law Deward and Dottie Douglas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Virginia O'Bryan; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Nancy and Paul Martin; and their children; and a special cousin Susan Grove. During the last eight weeks, Dougi was blessed by the wonderful care of Drs. Haley, Leonard and Hart, and dear friend Marilyn Dougherty. A service to celebrate Dougi's life is planned for Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277. Burial will be in the Church Memorial Garden at 10:00am. The Memorial Service will be conducted in the sanctuary at 11:00am, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Jack Pace CHARLOTTE - Bobby Jack Pace, Sr., 83, of Charlotte, died May 24, 2015, at his home. He was born on March 30, 1932 in Mecklenburg County to the late Lonnie and Odessa Pace. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Jack retired from Duke Energy. Jack was a faithful member of the M-T Covenant Class. In his retirement years, he loved dancing. His sense of humor and patience will be greatly missed.
