Smith, Betty Taylor - Charlotte  
Betty Taylor Smith peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Novant Health Presbyterian surrounded by her loving family and in the devoted loving care of Hospice. Betty was born February 26, 1931 in Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of William and Leona Taylor. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, M.L. "Buddy" Smith. Betty and Buddy enjoyed traveling, and especially doting over their beloved poodles. Betty is survived by three sisters; Evelyn Pender of Marietta, GA, Carolyn Wasserman and husband Bernie of Dunwoody, GA, Annette Pace and husband Jerry of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are nephews; Brian Pace and wife Keiko, Scott Pace, Lamar Pace, Jeffrey Pender and wife Tina, Chad Wasserman and wife Ashley, great-nieces; Kate Wasserman, Hannah Pender, Madison Pender and Lauren Pender, great-nephews; Jarrett Pace, Zachary Pace, Benjamin Pace, Austin Pace, Logan Pace and Ethan Wasserman. Betty graduated from Berryhill High School in 1949 and attended Central Piedmont Community College. She was employed by Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. from 1953 to 1987. She was a member of the Woodberry Forest Garden Club, where she gave an inspirational reading at the beginning of each meeting. She also loved attending Bible Baptist Church. The funeral service will take place at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 N. Sharon Amity Rd., Charlotte, NC, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Novant Health Hospice, Presbyterian Medical Center, P.O. Self, David Lee - Lincolnton  
David Lee Self, age 85, of Lincolnton, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2016, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Zion Cemetery. Mr. Self was born April 10, 1931, in Lincoln County, to the late Earl Yates Self and Rhoda Lawing Self. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by his daughter, Andrea "Cissy" Self Anderson; a sister, Earlene Self Kiser; and a brother, Kermit Self. David served in the United States Army, tank division, during the Korean Conflict. He was a Past Master of Lincoln Lodge and a member of Oasis Shrine. He was a truck driver for Carolina Freight Carriers and served as a Teamster president during that time. David was also a business owner of Estate Jewelers and Old South Antiques in Lincolnton for nearly 50 years. David was a real people person. He always enjoyed meeting new people and enjoyed the company of good friends. He never met a stranger. He was a man of great vision, strong values, and upmost integrity. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Carol Lee Self, and her two sons, Richard Aaron Meyer, and wife Donna, and Adam James Meyer, and companion Shanler Helderman, of Clemmons; daughter Karen Self Hurt, and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Amanda Hurt Hilton (Billy) of Hickory, Jeffery Reid Hurt (and companion Brittney) of Lincolnton; great-grandchildren, McKinley and Hadley Hilton; and a son, David D. Self, and wife Donna. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC 28092. Warlick Funeral Home is serving the Self family.

Shipman, Donnie Waine - Cornelius  
Donnie Waine Shipman, 78, of Cornelius, NC passed away on April 26, 2016. He was born in Hornersville, MO on September 20, 1937 to the late Jessie Howard Shipman and Mary Alice Shipman. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lizzie Shipman; daughter, Lynn Morton and her husband Brett; son, Waine Shipman and his wife Rebecca; grandchildren, Zane Morton, Jenna Morton, Allysa Shipman, Garrett Shipman; sister, Claudia Hull; and brother, Doyle Shipman and his wife Betty. Donnie was retired from the US Air Force after 22 years of Service, and later worked for RADAC for 15 years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending time with his family. Donnie never met a stranger and will be missed by all that knew him. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd, Salisbury, NC. Christina A. McDonald Schell HUNTERSVILLE - Christina A. McDonald Schell, 50, of Huntersville, NC and formerly of Harrisburg, PA died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, in Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center Hospice Unit in Charlotte, NC. She was a former Pharmaceutical Representative for Ventiv Co. and several other pharmaceutical companies. Christina was a member of St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, Huntersville, NC, an active member of the American Rabbit Breeders Assn., a graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School Class of 1983, attended Juniata College and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, a graduate of Messiah College, and received a Masters Degree of Clinical Psychology at Millersville University, and she formerly worked at the Suicide Hot Line in Charlotte, NC. Christina was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and a brother, David A. McDonald. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Michael G. Schell (having been inseparable since they were 15 years old dating); her parents, Thomas J. and Andrea D. Mickola McDonald of Harrisburg; a brother, Thomas P. McDonald and wife, Monika of West Chester, PA; two aunts, two nieces, four nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 25, 2016, at 11:00 am in Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 6150 Allentown Boulevard, Harrisburg, PA with Rev . Mark T. Wilke, Parochial Vicar, as celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date. A viewing will be held on Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the church. Arrangements are being handled by Fackler-Wiedeman Funeral Home, Harrisburg In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to www.gbs-cidp.org (an organization for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy).

Mrs. Smith, 92, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack F. Smith. She is survived by her children Jackie McCracken, Carol Kilgore, Linda Hulett, Jimmie Smith; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. During WWII she proudly served in the office of Adm. Chester Nimitz, Washington, D.C. She was a 63 year member of the former Belmont Park Methodist Church. Streater, Darlene Grace - Wadesboro  
Darlene Grace Streater, 62, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 22, 2016. Funeral services will be 5 PM on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Leavitt Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lilesville Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. It was Darlene's request for those attending the celebration of her life to "dress casually in their favorite colors to celebrate life and love," and share their stories of friendship. Darlene was born to Ila Williams Hill and Jasper Paul Streater on August 25, 1953 in Wadesboro, NC, the fourth of five children. She came home from Wadesboro Hospital to their home in Lilesville, NC. She graduated from Bowman Senior High School in 1971, attended Gardner Webb College in 1971-1972 and graduated from Pembroke State University in 1976. Her career in education began as a middle school classroom teacher and taught in the Anson County School System from 1976 to 1988. She was a teacher and counselor at the Youth Focus Psychiatric Center in Greensboro, NC from 1988 to 2005. She moved to Wilmington, NC in the fall of 2005 and taught middle school for the New Hanover County School System. She returned to Anson County in 2011 and taught middle school language arts until 2013. Her passion was language arts because her students could express themselves through creative writing. The calling on Darlene's life was mentoring her students. She taught 3 generations of students and loved having the children of former students in her class. She loved animals, even feral cats that gathered at her back door, and especially her cat, Miss Maye. She loved going to the beach, being outside in the sunshine, and socializing with friends. Surviving are her sisters, Dawn Streater Burtt (David) and Debby Streater Wheeler (Jack); her nieces and nephews, Jon Gates, Jessica Fogarty, Amanda Burtt, Emily McMahon, Helena Turner and Ben Streater, and their families. Also surviving are her step-son, Gregory Moore (Shawna); her grandchildren, Clara and Zoe; and her sister of the heart, Gail Dove (Paul). Memorial donations may be made to the Danette Streater Memorial Endowment, NC Community Foundation, 4601 Six Forks Rd., Suite 524, Raleigh, NC 27609.
