LaDuke, Hartley J.  
Hartley J. LaDuke CHARLOTTE - Hartley J. LaDuke, 82, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14, 2014, after a brief illness. Born June 15, 1932 in Albany, NY to Arthur LaDuke and Victoria (Jones), Hartley served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He then attended State University of New York at Albany on the GI bill and graduated with a degree in mathematics. He later went on to earn an M.B.A. from Boston University. An avid birdwatcher, Hartley briefly attended the Cornell School of Ornithology, studying birds and nature. In 1960, Hartley joined IBM as a computer programmer, working within their research and artificial intelligence divisions. From IBM, Hartley went to Control Data Corporation and eventually landed at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), where he would remain for the next 21 years. Hartley quickly rose within DEC to the position of Planning and Development Director, where he managed the development of the first COBOL compiler for mainframe computers and was integral in the creation of their first Federal Government Business and International Marketing Groups. After retiring from DEC in 1989, Hartley became a director at the Department of Conservation in Maine, a state Hartley considered his second home. It was in Maine where Hartley was able to indulge his love of canoeing, camping, fly-fishing, gardening, and stamp-collecting. An accomplished singer, Hartley was a proud member of the Winthrop, Maine CODA singing group and, after retiring to Charlotte, NC, was a member of the choir at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He had a love for flying electric model airplanes and was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and York County Fliers. Hartley served others as a hospice volunteer in Maine and Charlotte and an AARP Income Tax-aide volunteer. Hartley is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Richard LaDuke, and first wife, Mary-Jo (MacRoy). He is survived by his loving wife, The Reverend Jane V.F. Holmes; son, Matthew (Brenda) of Monroe Township, NJ; daughter, Sue (David) of Silver Spring, MD; stepsons, John (Michelle) of Florence, KY.; Tom of Spring, TX; and loving niece, Vanessa Klingensmith of Orange, PA. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Nathan, Tim, Emma, Molly, Tess, Stefan, Lauren, Emerson, Jaime, and Evan. Special gratitude is extended to Hartley's compassionate caregivers at Care Haven Senior Home Care Agency, especially Dr. Vina and P.S., and his tireless doctors at CMC; Drs. Meyers and Miller. A memorial service will be held January 3, 2015 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Huntersville at noon. Langford, Richard - Indian Land  
Richard Langford "Fred" INDIAN LAND - Richard "Fred" Langford of Indian Land, SC passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born May 30, 1934 in Greenville, SC and was the son of Virginia and Fred Langford of Inman, SC. Fred graduated from Durham High School, attended NC State University and received a Business Degree from Kings College, Charlotte, NC. Fred began his career in sales at General Electric, and retired as an electrical contractor, owner of his own company. Fred was a Mason and a Shriner. He sang in several church choirs and most recently he was a member of the York County Choral Society. Fred served as an Electrician's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1960. Fred is survived by his second wife, Alice Langford, step-daughter, Beth Ribbick and step-son, Robert Macdonald, all of Indian Land, SC. He has two step-granddaughters, Kali and Jessie. Fred is also survived by his first wife, Edwina Langford, and his two daughters and their husbands, Mary and James Kresge of Concord, NC, Patricia and James Heffner of Harrisburg, NC. He has five grandchildren, Misha, Trevor, Ravyn, Moriah and Landen. Fred is also survived by his sister and her husband, Virginia and Ashley Bullard of Johns Island, SC and he has loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Fred was preceded in death by his daughter, Ellen Langford, his brother and his wife, Robert and Faye Langford of Houston, TX and his parents. Funeral arrangements will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Unity Presbyterian Church's Historic Chapel, 303 Tom Hall Street, Ft. Mill, SC. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Unity Presbyterian Church, 303 Tom Hall Street, Ft. Lefkowitz, Leona - Charlotte  
Leona Lefkowitz CHARLOTTE - Leona Atlas Lefkowitz, 97, died peacefully in Charlotte on December 21, 2014. A resident of Sheveport, LA for 57 years, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rabbi David Lefkowitz, Jr. Long active in Jewish and civic affairs in Shreveport, Leona moved to Charlotte in 1999 to be near family and she enjoyed many good years at the Carriage Club. Survivors include her children David (and Janet) Lefkowitz III of Charlotte, Helen Lefkowitz (and Daniel) Horowitz of Cambridge, MA, Henry Lefkowitz of Columbia, MD, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Service and burial will be private. Leonard, Warren - Charlotte  
Warren Douglas Leonard CHARLOTTE - Warren Douglas Leonard, 84, of Charlotte, NC, passed away at home on Sunday, December 21, 2014. He was born on March 26, 1930 in Guilford County to the late Fred and Mary Leonard. He was raised in Greensboro, NC and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. Warren was a Staff Sergeant in the Army, 10th Special Forces. He worked in the textile industry, played baseball in the Special Forces and for UNC-Chapel Hill, and also enjoyed golf. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Brenda Leonard; sons, Michael Leonard (Kate) and Douglas Leonard (DeAnn); and daughters, Michelle Odette (Andy) and Ashley Leonard. Additional survivors include his sister, Mary Lee Foster; grandson, Beck Leonard; and grand-daughters, Blake Allman, Lucy Leonard and Brendan Allman. Warren was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Cox and brother, Dempsey Leonard. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 26, 2014, at Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the reception immediately following in the church atrium. Litaker, Susie Williams - Charlotte  
Susie Williams Litaker CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Litaker passed away Friday morning, December 19, 2014, at Stanly Manor in Albemarle. She was 87 years old. Born November 12, 1927, in Anson County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas B. Williams and Anna Griffin Williams. She worked for a number of years with Hickory Grove Upholstery and was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Litaker was preceded in death by her husband Herman L. Litaker, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her children, Elaine Mullis (Don), Michael Litaker (Sue), and Jenell Davis Fischer (Michael); eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Long, James - Charlotte  
James McKinley Long "Jimmy" CHARLOTTE - James "Jimmy" McKinley Long, 76, of Charlotte, went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00AM, Monday, December 22, 2014, at Christ United Methodist Church, Reverend Jim Humphries officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service at the church from 10:00 to 11:00AM. Entombment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Jimmy was born in Charlotte August 2, 1938 and was son of the late Henry McKinley Long and the late Avis Adams Long Strating. He was a member of Trinity UMC and attended Christ UMC for the last few years. He along with his late wife Carol, attended North Mecklenburg High School. He worked opening and remodeling Family Dollar Stores for more than 20 years. He later owned and operated Jim Long Window and Door Company in Charlotte for over 15 years. Surviving are his daughter, Robin Rhodes and husband, Jeff; son Kenny Long and wife, Kim, all of Charlotte; grandchildren, Will Saxon, Anna Rhodes, Tiffany Barber and husband, Brad, Neely Long and Laney Long; great-grandchildren, Jake Barber and Ella Barber; brother, Bobby Long and wife Mozelle, and all of his long-time breakfast buddies and golf buddies. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carol Fisher Long; brothers, Billy Long and Dickie Long; sister, Patricia Pickett and step-father, Reverend John Jack Strating.
