Long, Carole - Winston-Salem
Carole Ann Van Hoorebeke Frick Long WINSTON SALEM - Carole Ann Van Hoorebeke Frick Long, 71 (though she never looked her age), died unexpectedly from natural causes as she slept on April 23, 2015, at her home in Winston-Salem. Carole Ann was born July 14, 1943, in Joplin, Missouri, to US Army Captain George Van Hoorebeke and his wife, Marguerite Alice Clark. Her father was killed in action near Brest, France, in 1944; two years later, Lieutenant Martin L. Frick, Jr. married her mother and became Carole's daddy. Carole grew up in Greenville, SC, moving to Charlotte at age 14. She attended Greenville High School, East Mecklenburg High (Class of '61) in Charlotte, UNCG, and King's Business College. Her passion for adventure led to a long and varied career in the travel industry, beginning at Eastern Air Lines and retiring from US Airways in 2014. When her children were young, she worked at Hanes Dye and Finishing Company and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She enjoyed bucket-list trips to Paris on Bastille Day with her son and grandson; to Greece with her ninety-year old mother in tow; to New York City for her mother's 93rd birthday celebration; to St. Thomas for a Caribbean adventure with her sister, and most recently took a breathtaking journey through Brazil with her cousins. Carole had a marvelous eye for art; she loved music and theatre, and when she took to the dance floor, every eye was upon her. As a decorator, she brightened, organized, and beautified many rooms for friends and relatives. In years past, she volunteered in the costume shop of the Winston-Salem Little Theatre, and sewed for several passion play productions at Wake Forest University. Her favorite roles in life were those of mother to Lisa and George and grandmother to Sylas and Robinson. Carole spent the last decade of her life cheerfully caring for her elderly parents, and enjoyed some special moments laughing over old memories with her "Ouija" friends from East Mecklenburg. She was predeceased by her father amd step-father; her older sister Virginia Van Hoorebeke Frick Miller Hooker, and niece, Kristina Hinsdale. Survivors include her mother, Marguerite Clark Frick of the home; children, archivist Lisa Carole Long Feldmann (Edward), of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and artist George Robinson Long (Jessamine), of Roswell, Georgia; sisters Elizabeth Frick Holt (George), of Powhatan, VA, and Marguerite Frick Hinsdale (Mark), of Belews Creek; grandsons Sylas and Robinson Long, of Roswell; her aunts, Polly Clark Atkins, of Columbia, SC, and Betty Campbell Clark, of Greenville; nephews Tracy Miller, of Greer, SC, Martin Hinsdale, of Belews Creek, Chip Holt, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Bryan Holt, of Powhatan, VA, David Holt, of Fredericksburg, VA; niece Robin Miller Bomar, of Blue Ridge, SC; fourteen cousins including Suzy Atkins Heintz of Winston-Salem; and a passel of adoring great-nieces and nephews for whom she selected thoughtful and unique gifts. The celebration of her life will take place on Sunday, April 26, 2:00 PM, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Kernersville Chapel, at 141 Smith-Edwards Road, Kernersville, NC, officiated by nephew, Pastor Bryan Holt, with family visitation after the service. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com .
