Derek McElhaney Obituary

Derek Scott McElhaney
Scott McElhaney, 40, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Carolinas Medical Center surrounded by his family and friends.
Scott was born on February 3, 1970 in Charlotte, NC to Sam and Jenny McElhaney. He was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School class of 1988 and attended Lees-McCrae College. He was employed for many years by Dataprint, Inc. in Charlotte and was later a partner with Applied Data Technologies and most recent with Red Ventures and United Events Services.
He was very involved with Scouting in both Pack 33 and Troop 33, serving as the past Cub master, Quarter master and running several Etowah District Webelorees. 'We've lost a true friend and dedicated Scouter'.
His laughter and his zest for life will be missed by many. He was a kind, gentle spirit and had a twinkle in his eye. He was kind hearted, loving, and caring with an unsurpassed loyalty to his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father and son who taught his children the true meaning of serving others.
Scott was predeceased by his grandmother, Dorothy Richardson and his grandfather, Samuel L. McElhaney.
He leaves behind his parents, Sam and Jenny McElhaney; his wife, Ellen McElhaney; two children: Jacob and Julia McElhaney; grandfather, Keith Richardson, Sr. and grandmother, Betty Knight and her husband, Ted Knight; uncles: Keith Richardson, Jr.; Tom McElhaney and a host of cousins, uncles, aunts and friends.
A Celebration of Scott's life will be held on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Sardis Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. J. Thomas Kort officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will have a reception following the graveside in the fellowship hall.
Our family wants to give a heartfelt thank you to the 9th floor Neuro-Intensive Care Unit of Carolinas Medical Center especially, Lizi, Jamie, Rodney, Scott, Deena and Jeff for your kind and compassionate care. Thank you for being our angels on earth, may God bless all of you.

Dear McElhaney Family, Thinking of you this holiday season & praying that you will know God's peace as you grieve. Scott is always just over the shoulders of those gathered for pack mtgs. at Sardis:) It was a privilege to get to know him through scouting and to have such a man of integrity and fun to work with my son and so many others! May happy memories help to warm your heart.

Cub Scouts will just not be the same. Although Scott was not our Cubmaster any longer, he still made the time to come to pack meetings, camping trips and other Pack 33 activities. My son was very aware of his absence during our recent Camp Grimes trip, as I was and many others, as well. I am grateful to have had the chance to know Scott and to have the opportunity for my young son to see and be infuenced by such a shining example of what a cub scout, a boy scout and later on, a man, should be! His smiling face and playful personality will be sorely missed by this Cub Scout Mom!
