Randall Dorton Obituary

Randall Alexander Dorton
Mr. Dorton, 50, died Sunday, October 24, 2004 en route to the NASCAR event in Martinsville, Va. He was born May 1, 1954 in Concord, N.C., son of Jimmy and Lorene Dorton. He graduated Pfieffer College with an engineering degree in 1975.
Mr. Dorton was Director of Engine Operations for Hendrick Motorsports, NASCAR's most successful racing team of the last decade. Dorton oversaw the efforts of more than 100 specialists who build and rebuild 700-plus engines a year. He was also heavily involved in developing the future racing technology for General Motors. Randy's engines powered Hendrick race cars to four NASCAR Winston Cup Championships for Jeff Gordon and the 1996 title for Terry Labonte, plus Brian Vickers' 2003 Busch Series championship, three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series titles with Jack Sprague, plus four Daytona 500 victories.
Mr. Dorton was honored by NASCAR as its Engine Builder of the Year in 1986. Three members of his staff have also received the award.
He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, moderated the keynote breakfast at the annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, and was much sought after as an endorser for engine parts and lubricant manufacturers.
Randy's leadership qualities and giving nature were appreciated by many lives he touched within and outside the racing community, and his professional expertise was referred to as 'genius' by his competitors.
Mr. Dorton's career began assembling engines that propelled Dave Marcis within one spot of the 1975 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship. Hendrick acquired Dorton's company, Competition Engines, in 1984.
Mr. Dorton is survived by his wife of eight years and soulmate, Dianne Henry Dorton of Iron Station, his son Jonathan, his mother Lorene and brother Keith, all of Concord.
A celebration of Randy's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2004, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church North, in Concord.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Motor Racing Outreach or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

As a race fan, I toured Hendrick Motorsports for the first time around 10 years ago. The parts manager at the time was kind enough to take myself and my friend on a little "behind the scenes" tour. As we walked by the three engine assembly areas, I recognized Randy Dorton in one room. I congratulated him on a recent win and he was very gracious. It was a highlight of my shop tours.

We know not the day or hour we will be called into eternity. I believe Randy Dorton was ready for eternity. Are you?

Back in the mid to late 70's, Randy's wife at the time, Cathy, used to babysit my sister and I. Sometimes Randy would come home in the afternoon and let me sit in that cool Datsun 240Z that he had. It's just one of those things that sticks with you. God bless him and his family.

As general manager of a restaurant here in Charlotte, I have been fortunate over the years to have met many of the people responsible for the success of this great sport we know as NASCAR. And this was certainly no exception when, four years ago, I first met Randy and Dianne Dorton. Over the years they would often times come to our restaurant to celebrate victories, birthdays, friendships or simply the love they so obviously shared. Over this span of time my wife, Lori, and I became very close friends with the Dortons.

Well, as it turns out, one day Randy, knowing what huge NASCAR fans we were, invited Lori and I to be his guests at the final Southern 500 held on Labor Day weekend in Darlington. As you might expect, we immediately agreed and set out on race day to South Carolina's famous track. There, Randy had arranged for us to watch the race from The Darlington Room Suite and, while my wife and I had been to this track before, we had not known that Darlington even had any suites. As we climbed the staircase of a small, red building on the backside of the track we found an old, weather-beaten door simply marked 'The Darlington Room'. I glanced at my wife and wondered whether this could possibly be the right place. Somewhat reluctantly I opened the door and almost bumped into a gentleman carefully, yet skillfully, rotating a hotdog along a flat-top grill. As he spun around to reach for some condiments his name tag came clearly into view. I then very calmly turned to my wife and whispered, "Lori, don't look now, but that's Bill France Jr. spreading butter on a hotdog bun"! As we proceeded to our seat and rubbed elbows with some of NASCAR's most famous and influential people, it became quite clear that Randy had gone out of his way to make this race special for us. Indeed it was, as we were able to watch the entire race from this incredible and, as we now know, historic room.

As it turned out Terry Labonte ended up winning in an absolutely thrilling race. After the race we were heading back to the parking lot and Lori reminded me that Randy had said that, if one of his cars won the race, he wanted us to call him and he would take us to Victory Lane. Even though I knew it would be a "once in a lifetime" opportunity, I explained that I didn't want to bother Randy on such a momentous occasion for him, Terry and the entire Hendrick team. Eventually my clearly dejected, but understanding, wife agreed and we slowly made our way out to our car. Then, as we silently loaded our race gear into the trunk, my cell phone suddenly began to ring! As I lifted the phone to my ear all I could hear was unmistakable cheering, jubilation and unbridled joy in the background. Then a voice I instantly recognized asked, "Rick!...where are you and Lori? Come over here to Victory Lane!" I simply couldn't believe it; amidst all the celebration Randy had actually taken the time to call us! As we sprinted joyously back to the track and reached Victory Lane we saw Terry going through the ceremonial sponsor "hat dance". Then, off to the side, we saw Randy with that smile on his face that we both came to know so well. As we approached, Randy informed us to get ready to have our picture taken with Terry. Randy then reached into a bag and handed us sponsor hats and, as I placed mine on my head, I remember asking my wife, "In the rare case that someone should actually ask - what, exactly, does Delphi do for Terry?" As it turns out, no one ever asked, and we actually got to have our picture taken with Terry Labonte and Randy Dorton in Victory Lane! Needless to say it was an exhilarating moment in time and one that my wife and I will never forget. We will always remember Randy for his friendship and such simple acts of caring and kindness.

Dianne, you and Randy will always be in our thoughts, in our prayers, and in our hearts.

My condolences to everyone in the Dorton family. I don't pray much. Nor do I support the organization NASCAR. But, I would like to say that Randy helped put NASCAR where it is on the map today. Rick Hendrick would not be where he is today without Randy, AT ALL. Neither NASCAR. I don't know where we actually go when we leave here, but I do hope to meet Mr. Dorton someday and have a serious conversation about crankshafts and valve trains. Someday I hope that Randy and myself will be able to talk to Smokey Yunick, but the keys to that that Garage will never be found.

SO HURT BY RANDY'S LEAVING. WE GREW UP TOGETHER, WENT ON TRIPS WITH HIS PARENTS TO THE MOUNTAINS, AND TO THE BEACH. THIS WAS A LONG TIME AGO, BUT I REMEMBER IT AS YESTERDAY. OUR LIVES WENT SEPARATE WAYS, BUT I WOULD RUN INTO HIM ONCE AND A WHILE, BUT TO NEVER TALK FOR LONG, JUST A HELLO AND GOOD-BYE. I'M NOT SAYING GOOD-BYE NOW OR IN THE FUTURE. I HAVE AN EMPTY SPOT. THANKS MRS. DORTON(MOTHER) FOR ALL OF THE TIMES WE HAD.

I knew one of Randy's old neighbors and while visiting Charlotte years ago, he introduced us to Randy. During the busiest time of the year (Coca Cola 600 week), Randy stopped and gave us a guided tour of the Hendrick facilites, answered our questions and made us feel truly welcome. When the tour came West to Sears Point (near my home), he even made a point to see if we were attending the race. He told us where to find his motorhome just to stop by and say hello. He will be missed for all his contributions both on and off the track. Our prayers are with all of his family and friends.
