Dear Paula~~~ As I prepare to go to the FL show, you popped into my mind. Wondering what you've been up to, I googled you to find this sad news. I am so sorry to hear of your husband's passing and remember how supportive he was of your passion, apparent in just the short period that I spent with the two of you. Deepest condolences, Joni Goldbarg
Tom's car at a very rainy DE...

April 23, 2010
I did not know Tom well, but did have the opportunity to spend a rainy weekend at the track with him as my instructor. During that brief time, I found Tom to be a bit shy, but with a good sense of humor and a determination to make the best of an otherwise nasty weekend. He also went out of his way to share his knowledge of driving skills with me at every opportunity. My condolences and best wishes for his family and friends.

I came to know Tom through the PCA community and always looked forward to catching up with him at events.
Tom was a true Gentleman. He pursued his driving hobby with great passion and always made people smile.
My sincerest condolences go out to the Norby family.

I went to Owen High School with Norbs and while not close afterward we did chat about investments a few times. My favorite Tom story concerns the McDonalds on Tunnel Road in Asheville where he worked for awhile. You could go up and order any number of items, change your mind, and add other stuff and he would calculate never looking at the register and tell you the cost before your wallet was out. I was unable to be at the class reunion last year and feel your loss for such a brilliant, warm, funny gentleman.

All of us here at the office were deeply saddened to hear of Tom's passing. We will certainly miss his sense of humor, smile, and pure kindness that Tom always offered up for free. And how can we forget the bow-ties, loved them. With our deepest sympathy.

We are deeply saddened by the loss to our dearest friends, Tom’s mother Miss Pauline, his brother Robert and Robert’s family Julie, Alexandra, Luke and Lizzy. We have the great fortune to spend every holiday with the Norby’s, as our children have grown up together, as our adopted family here in Orlando.
We wish for peace and strength for Miss Pauline, who should not have had to endure the loss of a child, especially in the twilight of her own life. We know she treasured Tom’s annual visits. We have always included Tom “in spirit” at holidays and at Miss Pauline’s annual birthday celebrations - Ninety Two and counting. He will always be with us in spirit.

My sincere condolences to the Norby family and his many close friends in the passing of Tom. I first met Tom, affectionately nicknamed "Diamond", while working at MacDonald's in Asheville, North Carolina in the mid 60's. Tom was the consumate gentleman and I fondly remember playing pool with him when we got off work. I have not seen Tom in over 40 years, but when I heard of his passing, thru a close friend, I was stunned. God bless him and his entire family and friends. Tom will be sorely missed.

I just learned about Tom's death. I was surprised and saddened to hear about it. I haven't seen Tom in over 30 years. He and I were fraternity brothers at UNC. He was from Swannanoa and I was from Asheville. I didn't have a car. Tom would give me rides back home in his FIAT sports car (he'd let me drive some, too). He's also let me ride on the back of his HONDA 350 motorcycle (that was a huge bike back then). I remember when he went into the restaurant/bar business with a guy named Dennis Leary. I remember his working at Hector's. He was a good friend to me and kind to people he met. Some people are nice to people even when they don't have to be. That's my memory of Tom.

Carol and I are deeply saddened to hear of Tom's death. He was a special friend for both of us. Carol has known Tom since the 6th grade in Swannanoa. I got to know Tom in football camp before our freshman year at Owen High School. He was a big guy with exceptional intelligence, a sharp wit, and a quick smile. He was a man of many talents. I remember Tom with his camera equipment taking sports photos at all the Carolina games when we were students at Chapel Hill. After graduation, he was the official photographer for our wedding. Tom made this world a better place. We will all miss him.

Having known Tom for probably 30 years from the early years of the Tarheel Chapter of the BMW CCA to the Carolinas Region of the PCA, we share in the grief and disbelief that he is gone from this life but know in our hearts that he is at peace. Tom was always such a gentle, kind and friendly person. He dearly loved the challenges of high performance driving and, in turn, instructing others. We are certain that he now drives the perfect lap in Heaven.

Tom's passion for the PCA and Driver's Ed events opened up a whole new world for me. Once Tom told me how much he enjoyed track driving, I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I will always remember my first DE when Tom took me for several laps in his GT3. We were up to 121 mph and I still felt entirely safe with Tom at the wheel!
I truly looked up to Tom for many reasons. He was kind and treated everyone with respect. Tom could have easily boasted about his accomplishments, but instead he reached out to help people achieve their goals. A few minutes before Tom got on the track for his final laps, I saw him instructing a fellow PCA member. As always, Tom smiled and said hello.
Tom was a friend and mentor to me and to many others who knew him. I will always have fond memories of Tom. May God bless you and your family.

I wish to express my condolences to Tom's family from a fellow PCA instructor. While it is cliché to say he was doing something he loved at the time of his passing, I believe it to be true. Tom was a fixture at these driving events and always had a smile when we exchanged greetings. Even with that smile and mild manor, I always seem to have to get out of his way and give him a pass when we were on the track together, including this weekend. Sorry for your loss and we will miss car #101.
