Charles DuWayne Hinds "Duke" PINEHURST - Charles DuWayne Hinds "Duke", of Pinehurst, NC passed away at home, June 12, 2013. Born in Grove City, PA, November 4, 1926, to Margaret G. and Charles R. Hinds. Duke graduated Mercer High School, attended Slippery Rock College in PA, with graduate studies at Purdue University
. During WWII
, Mr. Hinds proudly served our country in the US Navy
as a hospital corpsman. He worked many years in the insurance industry, leaving Charlotte as Vice President of Pyramid Life Insurance. While at Pyramid, he met the "love of his life" - Carolyn to whom he was married for 43 years. In Pinehurst he worked as Site Supervisor for Kirby Construction until age 85. Duke taught Sunday School and sang lead with the performing quartet of Aberdeen First Baptist Church, where he was bestowed the honor of Deacon Emeritus for his service and spiritual guidance. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hinds was predeceased by his siblings - Bob, Pauline and Elaine. Survivors include: wife - Carolyn, son - Ron Hinds and wife Linda; daughters: Carolyn Galloway and husband Ed and Terry Nordland and husband Dan. Surviving grandchildren: Amber Copple and husband Doug, Matthew Kirby and wife Jennifer, April Holland, Jacob Kirby and wife Carrie and Stephen Kirby; great-grandchildren: Anna, Jacob and Ava Copple, Sophie and Luke Holland. Claire and Evan Kirby, Riley and Reece Kirby along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Aberdeen with Pastor Mike Branscome officiating. Interment service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Aberdeen First Baptist Church, PO Box 1066, Aberdeen, NC 28315.
